What's your favorite funky beer?

What’s your favorite funky beer?  I just want to see what people think

Fred

Duchesse De Bourgogne on draught

Cantillon Fou’ Foune on draught

Those bottles the guy in the brew club brings to some of the meetings.
He travels to Belgium a lot and brings some funky stuff Mmmmmmmmmmmm

Does Orval count?  I think that’s the only one I’ve tried/found so far and it was pretty darn tasty.

I think there is something wrong with me…I don’t care for the funky beer that much.  :stuck_out_tongue:

i haven’t had enough or that many, but i love duchesse, cantillion & orval.

i LOVE sour beers.  now if i could learn how to brew them.

Cantillon, Drie Fontienen, De Cam a top notch.

Boon, Giradin, Hanssens, and Cuvee Rene can be good.  Haven’t had the Oud Beersel in a while, and they have changed hands.

Rodenbach is good, as is LaFolie, and Petrus Oud Bruin for the Flanders Reds.  I can’t forget Panil.

Goudenband was a good Brown, don’t know if that is still in production.

A Berliner Weisse is a good drink on a hot day.

Geene King Strong Suffolk Ale is a classic.

Nah,  spoiled food is an aquired taste

I like a nice pale ale flavored with chili pepper. I don’t think I would make 10 gallons of it, but it’s a nice change of pace.  8)

I’ve done two like that with an amber.  First wasn’t spicy enough, the current one is too spicy.  Maybe next time…

deProef’s Reinart for funk and Duchesse De Bourgogne sour. I would love to get my hands on a Rodenbach but no luck yet. Waiting for pellicle to drop on a Belgian Dark Strong I pitched with WYeast’s Orval VSS 3789. It may become my favorite…

So far in my limited range of tastings, I like Avery Sui Generis very well it is a great blend of several cask aged funky beers.

I like Ommegang’s Bier de Mars.

I’m not sure I know what funky beer is?  I just figured they were all styles… and some I like less than others.

I don’t consider lambics, Berliner Weisse, or the Flanders red/brown beers “funky”.  To my palate, they are refreshing.

I’d guess one person’s funky beer is another’s ambrosia.

Jolly Pumpkin does some awesome stuff.  I especially like the Bam Biere, which is obviously made in the style of Orval.

Gueuzes/Lambics from Cantillon are always good.  I prefer Rodenbach Grand Cru to the Duchesse for Flanders Reds.

I did a Bam Wheat clone 2 years ago since it was my favorite of of the Bam series.  I brewed 6 gallons for some reason, lucky for me because my carboy of ready to drink Bam Hefe broke and all I was left with was the gallon jug I had saved.
As for funky beers it still has to be Orval. As for sour I love Rodenbach Grand Cru and the Duchesse, Drie Fontein, and just about any others.  Cantillon Lou Pepe 2003 Kriek is calling for me from the beer fridge as we speak.

A group of us in Jacksonville have initiated a Lambic Barrel project. This past weekend we met and sampled 16 commercial sour/funky beers, and are now culturing the “dregs” to pitch into our first 50 gallon batch. There was a wide range, from cleanly sour and fruity, to intense funky barnyard Brett. Here http://www.thecask.org/phpBB3/download/file.php?id=264 are tasting notes from this awesome event. They are listed in order of tasting. Each has a “score” out of 10, followed by my ranking (there are ties in ranking the 16 beers). I’m definitely a fan of Cantillon. This was a great way to get a wide sampling, since some of the beers are quite expensive. With 10 participants, we got 1-2 oz. pours of all 16, at $20 per head.

Cheers,

MikeL

My favorite “funky” beer of 2009 was either Avery Brabant, RR Consecration or CL CdC?  :-\

Jacobin Geuze is excellent, as is Liefmann Kriek.

I love Jolly Pumpkin and their BamBier os awesome. Orval may be one of my favorite beers in the Universe. I share that in common with Vinnie Cilurzo - least thats what he told me.

I also have had some excellent, awesome, OUTSTANDING funky and soured beers from De Dolle Brouwers, such as Oerbier. Sadly, for me, Rodenbach Grand Cru is just too damn sour. Makes a good salad dressing - but I need more balance in my acidity.
