The title says it all. A co-worker quit drinking for 3 months. He is now faced with the dilemma of choosing his first beer. Of course, this got me thinking. What if I was making that decision?
I’ll start by saying I would choose my homebrewed tripel. It is so tasty. Of course, with a high alcohol content I probably wouldn’t be able to drink much after that long time of abstinence.
Which beer would you choose?
If it were me, I’d go with a go-to beer, something I’m very familiar with and enjoy a lot. That’d probably be something like DAB or Weihenstephaner hefeweizen. But my beer tastes change as rapidly as my music tastes from day-to-day. Whenever someone asks me what I’ve been listening to lately, I never know what to say because it changes so much. Same for beer, unless I just say what’s on tap at my house.
I have this same dilemma when I take just a week off from drinking any beer; 3 months is a long haul.
I would have to go with something like an ESB or APA as a palate reset. Don’t want something too extreme like a 2000 IBU DIPA, 14% barleywine, or enamel-peeling sour after a few month hiatus. I would be looking to work my way back to the bigger or bolder beers.
I don’t really have a “go to” beer either. Recently I’ve been drinking a lot of lighter, sessionanble beers. Excluding the tripel of course. DAB is a beer that I haven’t had for awhile and have always enjoyed it when I did.
If it were me, I’d go to the local brewpub with some family/friends and just get whatever looks good in the 3-6% ABV range. When I want to make a beer memorable I find it’s not just the beer, it who/where I enjoy said beer with.
I quit for the month of January this year and can’t remember what I had. I would have whatever I was in the mood for like usual. That would depend on weather, what I’m eating if anything, where I am, what I got etc. I wouldn’t necessarily avoid strong flavors or high ABV is if that’s what I was in the mood for, I don’t think anything magical happens to your pallet from not drinking that makes it in need of a reset. I have been on ten day fasts before and when done have had something low abv and with food as I recall.
