YEAST PITCH RATE – PT. 3: ALE VS. LAGER IN A KÖLSCH| EXBEERIMENT RESULTS!

Pitching the proper amount of yeast has come to be one of the more important aspects of brewing, with people using calculators to determine how large of starters are require for the beer they’re making. Contributor Malcolm was curious just how pitch rates impacted beer, so he split a batch of the same wort and hit half with a typical amount of yeast for an ale while the other was pitched with the amount more typical of a lager. Results are in!

Interesting results, Malcolm.  I like the little pear-like quality in a Kolsch, though I brew mostly lagers these days, so maybe I will do a side by side for myself to see what I like better going with different pitch rates on a lager batch.

I’m about to do a side by side between WLP029 and WY2565, only because I’ll have our only large conical tied up with a Festbier and I want to brew another 10g of beer.

I’ve heard about the differences online but I really just want to see which one I like on my own. I think I may have husband do a triangle test on me while filling out score sheets to finally see which yeast does what for myself. Citizen science, yeah?  8)

YEAH!

This makes me want to brew a kolsch. I brew mostly lagers nowadays, but kolsch would be a slight change…I could probably use that.
Thanks for the exbeeriment, Malcolm.
