I went to Vancouver BC for work once, and a Canadian I worked with told me - when you’re in a conversation with some Canadians and there’s a lull in the conversation, out of nowhere just say:
“Play hockey, eh”.
So I did.
It was hilarious! They immediately started going “oh hell yeah” and yammering on about hockey this and hockey that. I’m a hockey fan so the conversation was fun, but man! It was like a pre-programmed trigger phrase. ;D
Summers in college, one of my brothers worked on a boardwalk on the Outter Banks of NC. They called tourists “Tourons” for Tourist Morons. They’re slogan was “Tourons have twenties”
Freebird!!! (Hand over heart and head bowed, boys)
Them Skynyrd boys are actually due south from Spartanburg in Jacksonville.
Keep it alive forever people!!! Play it pretty for Atlanta!
But come on , Cap…come on down to one of the “Moonshiner’s Reunions”. Bring 3 or four cases of your best and a tent ( unless you don’t mind sleeping in the bed of a pick up truck or on on the ground) and see what real culture is all about. Experience “America” at it very best. Bring a grill and show our folks what real BBQ is all about.
I promise we take a canoe trip afterwards 8) 8) 8) 8)
No, just beer, I’m sure the folks down here would be in awe with which you brew. There may be the occasional jar floating around, so I’m told ( I jest, that would be illegal, wouldn’t it ;D) and the way way you cook, your awesome magic on a grill, you could be considered a god, just like Cortez was to the Aztecs.
I challenge you now, and if you are willing to take it, to come to South Carolina, to the 2011 Moonshiner’s Reunion, bring your family as a vacation, held on the 1st weekend in October, to experience all the we have to offer. Are you up to the challenge? It’s a vacation I promise you will never forget. I plan to cook chili beans. What you going to bring that will beat that?
Oh man, here’s a slice of down home Georgia fun. In '96 I went to the Olympics in Atlanta. I stayed at a buddy’s house in Lawrenceville. He took me to some friend of his about a half hour away in the sticks. It was unbelievable, like a caricature of down home southern livin. It was like a mobile home park, but with bigger lots. The place was like a non stop block party. There were two guys building a flat roof thing over the trailer door and putting down regular 3 tab shingles on a roof with no slope. The neighbor had his mud buggy at the mud bog the night before, so he was cleaning the heinous red mud off his buggy. The buggy was on a trailer. Of course, he didn’t need ramps to unload it- he just fired it up and gassed it off the back of the trailer. The topper to the whole scene was that there were 2 girls, about 12 or 13 years old, wrasslin in a baby pool. The boys were enjoying the show too much for me. It still doesn’t seem real.
One thing I will say about the south is that we have the best food in the states, which is a good reason why we have the fattest people in the nation as well. Everyone else tries to emulate - but you simply can’t get BBQ this good anywhere else. Sorry folks.
Grew up in the far southwest corner of Louisiana so made fun of Texas instead; however Louisiana really can’t make fun of anyone… except for Arkansas and Mississippi since those two are the only two states that consistently rank last with them on most polls and studies.
Went to college in Monroe, LA in the NE part of the state and experienced what I had always heard growing up, that if you get much farther north of I-10 it really isn’t Louisiana anymore it’s really just an extension of AR and MS. The food and the culture are fairly different from north to south, and the difference is with the Cajuns in the south.
Why do all the trees in Louisiana tilt to the west?
…because Texas sucks.
I was visiting relatives in Wisconsin. Last Sunday, we stopped at the Lakefront Brewery in Milwaukee. There I learned that FIB stood for “Fellow Illinois Brethren”.
