If you could have the recipe for one commercial beer...

Ingredients, mash temps and processes

…and he will never brew it, because it calls for Clusters and Fuggles.

There’s a joke in here somewhere… maybe we should invent a new recipe based on the Schlitz recipe, but add Honey Bunches of Oats cereal to it as well, and then name it Fuggly Clusters of Schlitz???

Man, that sounds delicious.

Off the rails again. This thread is doomed. LOL

Honestly, I just want to brew some of the beers that are “in my head”, if that makes sense.

But those aren’t commercial beers, but then this thread isn’t on topic, so…

Agreed.  And its even worse, because even batch to batch there are variations.
It is simply not possible to duplicate.  Better to just enjoy the real thing.

Denny,

Who gave you that hand written recipe for Schlitz? :stuck_out_tongue:

As an aside, trying to clone a beer is called “fun”, at least by some.

Is home-brewing really about perfectionism, fault-finding, sophistry, hair-splitting, caviling and general pettiness?  I think the OP had good intentions but the thread degraded rapidly with stupidity.

To whomever posted the Gulden Draak, I think I’ve found a beer I’d like to try and clone!  Time for some research on the yeast used by the Brouwerij Van Steenberge.

How so? Are you not the OP?

Exactly. I think there were some legit questions and debate raised, ie., what is a recipe? Just % of ingredients? A detail of process as well? Also, the example of Cantillon Gueze was spot on - you could have the grist and complete process and not duplicate it because the local flora there is a signature of the flavor profile. I think, like many threads here, it took twists and turns along the way and made for good debate. I must have missed the pettiness and stupidity that you saw.

Maybe I’m misinterpreting posts but to me it seemed derailed as it got too technical immediately and wasn’t meant to be that way.  Perhaps “stupidity” is too strong of a word.  Was anything gained, perhaps.

Was meant to be more of a light hearted discussion about a short-cut (the recipe!) to that beer you’d like to clone or a beer you’ve always fancied, etc…

Don’t get me wrong, I’d LOVE to be able to brew Cantillon Gueze.  It really is one of my all time favorite beers.  But I have no illusions of actually being able to do it.  It’s just a fantasy.

(Sounds like an old song by Aldo Nova).

Great 80’s reference. Feel like I’m in high school again!

Usually no one on this forum intends to offend. I certainly didn’t. And derails are usually fun.

My wish for a commercial recipe would be any WBC gold medal winner, but first the brewery has to call me and get the recipe. Then brew it and win.

Is this English? Google can’t translate…

We derail a lot.  Stuff happens.  No worries.

I really wasn’t trying to be a jerk, either.  Sorry if it came across badly.  I raised Cantillon Gueze as a prime example of a beer I love, is universally lauded, but also simply un-cloneable.  I thought that was exactly the spirit of the OP.

I really didn’t see anything dickish. I think it derailed (as posts do here) and made some interesting points in the process. I definitely didn’t mean any ill will. I really would like to have the Rochefort, Orval, and Dupont recipes/processes I mentioned.

And I have actually brewed that recipe, thanks denny

I would imagine that would be me that gave Denny that recipe. I have several Brewlogs from Schlitz from both the mid 70’s and early 60’s.

As odd as it may seem. I prefer the mid 70’s recipe to the early 60’s recipe.
