Recirculating Immersion Chiller with Pond Pump

Just a mere twelve years later, I picked up this project and completed it. I did several test runs today and only had one slight mishap, when I didn’t have a QD pushed in correctly on the second trial run, and thus had a brief and refreshing cold-water shower in the backyard.

Most of the components were repurposed, and a work colleague gifted me a hand-me-down copper immersion chiller (I had one, long ago, but gave it away due to how much water it used). Repurposed items included a 9-gallon cooler (formerly a mash tun, before I moved to an all-in-one) and various fittings, hose clamps, etc. I had acquired over the years, plus a pile of garden hose QDs from my gardening gear. I bought additional fittings plus high-pressure tubing for the chiller. I have a 1/4 hop submersible pump that isn’t exactly repurposed since I bought it for this project lo these years ago. There is probably an economic term for finally getting use out of an earlier acquisition… recovered value or something.

Next up: planning for my first brew in a year! Wahoo!

And here is the system in use for yesterday’s brew session. It worked great. I was impressed by how fast the wort temp dropped and how easy the process is overall. My only wish list item is to get some parts to make a slightly more elegant solution for draining the cooler. (Pasting pics in this new forum is a breeze!)
