i’ve learned a lot about other languages, including german.
imho
-english speakers need to stop worrying about saying one single word perfectly in some other language because saying one word a very special way and everything else english doesnt matter. point being - its better to know a fair amount of a language and have imprecise pronunciation than to wierdly focus on a few super common words (or brands in this case) and carefully recite it to yourself in preparation for saying that to someone who cares.
-english monolingual speakers need to please stop saying "i apologize for pronouncing this wrong reads name or word " or saying something like this after saying a name. people in other countries cant say my last name and they dont pretend to care, and i dont bother correcting them.
-you CAN and should learn more of other languages no matter how old you are. it has never been this easy. you can do all of it right from your computer screen + desk - audio, video, listening, writing etc. you do NOT have to be young to learn a language, i hate people who insist that “you have to start young”. just do it, its fun
I think what would be ideal is for some recognized authority, say AHA or BA, to put together a pronunciation guide and put it on line. No more wondering about which is right (hopefully).
Looks like a phonetic translator for entertainment purposes. Where I lived in Germany (Baden-Württemberg),
Ein Weizen, bitte would get you a hefeweizen. Eine Weisse, bitte would get you a sour from Berlin. Ein Weissen, bitte would get you “Wait, do you want one or two sours from Berlin?” Ein Weissbier, bitte would get you a dirty look and a “This isn’t Bavaria.”
