3/8" x 50' Stainless Steel Wort Chiller

I’ve been happy with my 1/2" x 50’ Copper Wort Chiller…However, with all the LODO talk and some research on copper toxicity, I’m thinking of buying a stainless steel IC. Anyone using a SS IC that would care to comment on whether this is a worthwhile move?

If copper toxicity was an issue, breweries would have stopped using copper kettles a long time ago.

From what I have seen, the difference in cooling efficiency is pretty negligible at our volumes. I think the key here is to decide if you are not happy with your current chiller and if you really want to go after the GBF style of brewing. I’d say you need to “upgrade” if you want to go low o2. If you are only quasi interested, maybe make that change later.

Use that copper chiller as a prechiller and you’ll be down to pitch temps very quickly. This is how I’m justifying a SS chiller purchase in the near future.

Thanks for the replies…Using the copper IC as a  prechiller was definitely in my thoughts for summers here in Houston…I ordered some Brewtan B because of some of the positive comments and have been attempting some of the LODO procedures…Probably won’t go full tilt in that direction…
