41 YEARS AGO, HOMEBREWING BECAME LEGAL!

On October 14, 1978 Jimmy Carter signed into law H.R. 1337, which included an amendment creating an exemption from taxation for beer/wine brewed at home for personal or family use. And thus, 41 years ago home beer and winemaking became federally legal!

Cheers!

I’ll tip back a beer to that.

Indeed a day worth celebrating!

A few things to note:
Though this is the anniversary of the signing of that omnibus transportation bill, the homebrew law didn’t go into effect until February 1, 1979.
Home winemaking had been federally legal since the repeal of prohibition.
Credit for the legalization of homebrewing should go to Senator Alan Cranston and Representative William Steiger, the main sponsors of the homebrew amendment.
