An experiment.

Tonight, I tried an experiment.

I have a 1 1/2 gal. crock pot with a porcelain bowl in it.
I placed 2 qt. Of water in it and turned it on HI, to see what max temp I could achieve. Around 135 degrees .
Porcelain has an incredible heat retention to it.
Heated water on the stove to 170 degrees, add 3 lbs of grains, stir get to 158 degrees and hold for an hour.
Got the target temp, placed a thick towel over the lid and turned the heat to low.

I helped my 9 year old daughter with her geometry.
Yes. 9 years old, she’s learning geometry.
I opened the lid, and smell that beautiful malty cereal sweetness. My daughter thinks it smells horrible. I love the smell.
I strain the grains, chill the wort.
1 1/4 gal of water ended up with almost a gallon of wort.

Hope this works.

Keep us posted.  I keep thinking about 1-gal. batches for experimenting bu tmy 10-gal. setup makes it to hard.

It worked incredibly well!
I’m going to take better measurements next time.
I mashed like a champ!

Congrats on your mash.  Are you then proceeding to boil and add hops or are you simply making starter base wort?

I’m going to add it when we go to put in the fermenter for our Irish Red Ale.
I was concerned about a 16 lbs. grain bag, so I mashed some grains to reduce the weight.
Also, I wanted to see if I could maintain the mash temperature over the course of an hour.
