Austin, TX

I’m going to be in Austin for a couple of days.  Anyone have any suggestions for cool stuff to check out there - music, beer, bbq?

I don’t eat beef or pork, but I’m hoping to find some good chicken.

This is from my buddy who lives in Austin:

South - Zax Pints and Plates http://www.zaxaustin.com/  - decent food with a few local beers on tap (Independence, 512, Live Oak, Real Ale [Blanco], St. Arnold’s [Houston])

Uncle Billy’s http://www.unclebillysaustin.com/  - Great hand-crafted beer and pretty decent BBQ

Central/Downtown - Lovejoy’s 604 Neches St - Good hand-crafted beer.  Didn’t care for the atmosphere (dark and dingy, even at night!)

North - Draught House http://www.draughthouse.com/  GREAT selection of beer, including their own brew as well as many local breweries.  Really good crowd and great atmosphere.

NXNW http://www.nxnwbrew.com/  - Brewery and restaurant.  Haven’t been in a while but don’t remember being disappointed by anything.

There is also a Flying Saucer if you just want a HUGE selection of beer from all over the world http://www.beerknurd.com/stores/austin

  • Independence Brewing Company
  • Live Oak Brewing Co
  • (512)
  • Real Ale Brewing Company - actually in Blanco, TX, but beers are on tap in Austin

I had great beer and q at Uncle Billy’s when I was there last year.  They are making some really good beer there and the food is good too.  It’s a shame you won’t be trying the ribs.

Austin and some of the towns in the area are the home of brisket, but it is a shame you won’t be eating that.

We always like the Gingerman if we are downtown.  Really like the Live Oak beers and some from Real Ale.

Several new brewpubs have opened since we were there last time, so I can’t report on those with any knowledge.

Man I miss this place…

Gone but not forgotten… 8)

Check out the Whip In off of I35 South.  It is a very neat beer bar with an Indian theme.  If you are on 6th St.  stop in at Lovejoys.  It has great dank and a very good beer selection.  Finally, make sure and score some JesterKing.  It is a very good new brewery in Austin.

I was going to suggest picking up some of the Jester King black metal Imperial stout.  Brewed and fermented while only true Norwegian black metal is played!  That’s my kinda beer!

Thanks for the responses so far, I hope to be able to check out a few of these places.
