beer Books?

To those die-hard home brewing fanatics

What is the must have book for great home brewing knowledge. Looking for some light reading before bed, cant hurt to learn at the same time.

Would love to add a couple of beer books to my library.

some i enjoy…

brew like a monk
extreme brewing
tasting beer
the brewmasters table
radical brewing
designing great beers

Thanks deepsouth,

im going to check them out

How to Brew by John Palmer

Brewing Classic Styles by Jamil Z and John Palmer is another good book.

How To Brew, of course.  Designing Great Beers is a nice book for in-depth coverage of a variety of styles (although not all are included).  BCS has a recipe for most styles and good brewing tips.  I’d also recommend Yeast, a new release that has some of the newer advice you can get regarding ferm temps, starters, etc.

i assumed he had that one, so i didn’t mention it.

to the OP, if you don’t have this one, get it first.  there is an online free version of this as well.

cheers.

this one is very nice as well!

Although the print 3rd edition is by far the best version.

true that.  plus, i like to have an actual book to flip through.  lots harder to cross-reference stuff on the internetz.

sweet, thanks everyone. This is a great list to start with.

going to hit up my local 1/2 priced books 1st and then go from there.

The only book I currently on came with my brew kit

Home Beermaking by Wimmiam Moore 3rd edition

not mentioned yet, and since you don’t have it…

the complete joy of homebrewing by charlie papazian.

These three are my favorites. I’m always coming back to them, although Designing is not quite bedtime-friendly reading. I like to have a calculator with me when I read that one.

yeah, im trying to get used to using some of the math involved in brewing.

I have all these except for “tasting beer”.  I would agree with phillamb168 that Designing is not exactly bedtime friendly.  Brewing Classic Styles and the Yeast book by Jamil Z and Chris W are also excellent books.  The Yeast book is not very bedtime friendly as it gets quite technical.

whoops.  i glossed over the bedtime reading part…  designing great beers is pretty in depth and not really casual reading.  i agree.

Something to keep in mind about DGB is that it’s getting very dated at this point.  There are a lot of new ingredients and techniques that aren’t covered in the book.

All these titles are great guys

Looking for both light reading and more detailed indepth books as well.

Wife and I have a book shelf in our room, I have one shelf to myself that are all pretty much DIY type books for my various hobbies. Aquariums saltwater and fresh, reptiles, classic cars and now beer! I think this is going to be one of the most rewarding hobbies ive ever had because other get to really try my beer and share with me what they think.

I have quite a beer library, collected over the past 20 years.  The one I reach for most for reference is Brewing Lager Beer by the late Greg Noonan.
For recipe formulation help I like Brewing Classic Styles.
For general recreational reading I like Radical Brewing.

I love Radical Brewing for crazy ideas for recipes and weird ingredients.  This is probably my favorite book.

How to Brew for technical info.

The New Complete Joy of Homebrewing for beginners because I think it is a better starter book.

Various style books for the appropriate styles.

Lots of recipe books that I look at for ideas, but Brewing Classic Styles is my favorite for great recipes to start from.

I haven’t delved in to any of the new books yet, they’re in the pile though
