Hey all, I saw that some of you had mentioned Beersmith and had print outs from it in your posts. I have heard of it but haven’t done much looking into it.
Is it worth however much it costs?
Does it work on Mac?
I have created a sort of excel spread sheet to calculate gravity, color (loosely) and IBU, does this program do more than that?
check out the beersmith forum at BeerSmith.com for details. Brad is currently working on the Mac interface for the next version (version 2.0, early next year). I believe some users are successfully using an emulator but I’m not sure.
BeerSmith is my brewing log and I use it extensively.

No Beersmith for Mac yet and I miss it so much. I have tried Beer Tools Pro which has a Mac version but I am so used to Beersmith that it just doesn’t cut it for me. The one program I miss when I switched to Mac. I am getting my old Dell Notebook fixed just so I can run Beersmith. What sucks is when it crashed I lost all of my recipes with my Beersmith. Hopefully there is a Mac version soon and my Time Capsule will keep current back ups and I will never have that problem again.
I used Beersmith for a couple of years and loved it. My PC died in Februrary and I got a Mac. Now I use Beer Alchemy and after much sadness and longing for Beersmith, I got used to the Beer Alchemy interface. In my opinion it is just as powerful and useful as Beersmith, plus there is an iPhone app version of Beer Alchemy that effectively ties the program to your phone and computer. No more hauling the laptop out to the back patio while brewing. It’s quite nice. But hearing the news of a Mac version of Beersmith, I am intrigued.
I have tried Beer Alchemy to but just couldn’t warm up to it. It is OK but once you get set in your ways it is hard to change. I was breezing through Beersmith in less than a half hour when I first got it. Beer Tools isn’t bad but I have tried to contact their tech support on more than one occasion with no reply on questions I couldn’t find searching their forum

I use the PC version of Beersmith for all my recipe formulation and brewing logs/notes. It’s one of the best $25 purchases I’ve made for brewing.
There are a couple of niggling details I wish were different, especially the “boil off rate” calculation, but on the whole, I’m a very satisfied user.
I’m excited to see how 2.0 will turn out.
Definetly worth the money. Luckily I still have a PC.
I’ve used Promash, Beersmith, and Beertools and I have to say I prefer Beersmith. It’s just overall seems a lot easier to use. I think it’s the interface that jusat seems to suit me best.
I have always used beertools lastnight I download the trial version of beersmith is there a big difference between the trial version and real thing? The grain ingredients is really lacking, and some of the text is very difficult to read, also in beertools while makeing a recipe I can duplicate ingredients but not in beersmith. Otherwise I really like the layout and versatility of beersmith and may be changing soon.
Except for the timelimit the Trial BeerSmith IS the real thing. You can play with the settings to change the font colors etc. to make it more readable for you.

You could run current version of beersmith thru WINE (emulator) in Mac and Linux.
I run ProMash in Linux thru WINE.
It runs very well.
As for the OP , you can simply copy and paste directly from Beersmith into most forum posts succuessfully , no special html language needed…hope this helps
I tried free tools, Beer Tools, and then Beersmith. I realy like it a lot.
I probably use about 50% of the capabilities, but all I know if I get a good recipee and good beer results.
I just like to read about a recipe or style and then start messing around making my own version.
Other plus:
-Fred Loaded a lot of his recipees in it
-Brad Smith is active in his forum and will answer any question you send him
-It is very flexible
It is a steal for $25.
You can download more grain options from the beersmith site. In addition you can always add and customize ingredients
Within the grain, yeast, and hops ‘databases’ you can duplicate and/or alter any item. You can also add styles the same way.
