Brewersedge mash and boil question

I have a Brewersedge Mash and Boil unit with a recirculation pump. On the recirculation arm I have a 2” piece of tubing and then a diffuser attached to that. When I start the pump the wort level rises above the diffuser. This makes me uncomfortable. Thinking something may go wrong, I turn off the pump. Is it okay that the wort level goes above the diffuser? Am I panicking for no reason? Need some advice. Thanks

From what I can gather from your description, I think the risk is running your pump dry. I don’t have your exact system, but I run a similar setup with recirculation. I like to keep the grain bed covered with wort. I’m ok with that wort level rising, but I don’t want my pump to run dry. If it does, I throttle back the flow or turn it off until wort settled through the grain bed.

It sounds like your system’s pump flow rate is higher than the mash bed can convey. You need to throttle the pump flow to better match the bed capacity. If there isn’t a valve in the system, I’d say a pinch clamp on the return hose should be workable.
