What are you channeling Billy Mays?
And there is no “H” in Clorox?
suprising.
I am always nervous that no matter how much I rinse, the oils from the soap will remain.
I use Starsan (sanitizing) the most. It’s in spray bottles throughout my house.
I use Ivory soap for general cleaning. I also use PBW and Iodophor on occasion. PBW is great for cleaning kegs.
Being clean and sanitized is a major part of our business. ;D
+1 on the StarSan spray bottles. I have them in 3 places, one in my fermentation chest, one by my kegerator, and one by my general brewing equipment.
Starsan - in a sealed bucket and in a spray bottle for the immediate need
PBW - general cleaning
Barkeepers friend - for those stubborn stains
What type of cleaner is Bar Keepers Friend?
It’s a powdered non-chlorine cleaner for all surfaces. I primarily use it for cleaning stainless steel (ie. my brew kettle).
You can find out all you want to know at…
It’s great for cleaning SS. One of it’s best properties is that it contains oxalic acid and will repassivate the SS.
There’s a liquid version of Barkeepers friend that the label says has citric acid.
But like Denny says, the powdered version has oxalic acid.
Give a listen to the Brewing Newtork’s Brew strong episode on cleaning. there’s some interviews with the guy from 5 star that are pretty interesting. And John Palmer is a metallurgist and knows his stuff when it comes to cleaning SS.
I didn’t know there was a liquid version. Have you used the both, Don, so you could compare them for us?

Just helping him R.I.P. ;D
Oxyclean and BKF for cleaning. Iodophor and Star-San for sanitizers.
Apparently to no avail . . . ![]()
About 10 years ago, dishwasher soap was a favorite among homebrewers. I don’t recall anyone ever having anything negative to say about it.

so why aren’t you using it? ![]()
Because I like Oxiclean and PBW so well that I don’t have any incentive to change…it’s the pragmatic way! ![]()
OxyClean, StarSan, and Barkeeper’s Friend
Same here.
Ox i clean, Starsan and a scotch no-scratch sponge, (the blue one) The sponge is mostly
to clean the hop mess at the top of the boil kettle at the end of the brew day, and the occaional
malt that gets glued to the bottom of the kettle.
I use regular old dish soap to clean everything immediately on brew day. Since it is not unscented (does anyone know where to get unscented dish soap?), I’m sure to rinse well. At some point, afterwards, I will also soak everything but the kettles in Oxiclean to make sure there is nothing left on them.
I keep a plastic tote of Star San on hand to sanitize everything, discarding it as soon as it starts turning cloudy.
I have some Barkeeper’s Friend, but I haven’t tried it yet on my kettles. I works well on my stovetop though.
