Deep Fried Macaroni & Cheese

Anybody tried this?

It occupies its own food group in the Tubercle household.

It was first encountered in a restaurant in Charlotte, NC. The Carolinas are famous for deep frying anything that can be battered or skewered on a stick.

Its easy to make; Just make a big pan of mac & cheese (please don’t use that store bought ready made kind in a kit box that has some kind of orange looking plastic cheese chemical, make the real stuff like grandma made, with milk and sharp cheddar).  Chill in the fridge several hours until it sets good, scoop out a ball with a big spoon or an ice cream scoop, dip in your favorite batter, hit the 350f grease until G,B &D.

Its like candy.

There’s a fancy pants restaurant around here that does that. They make nice fried triangle of mac & cheese crack with a dipping sauce that appears to mostly be a mixture of Crystal and Franks.

That’s almost as good as the Angus chili cheese filled donuts.

Yeah, I’ve had it as bar food but have never made it myself.  It would be something fun to try at home.

In fairness I should mention that fried onions are #1.

Mac & cheeses is #3, just behind flounder.

Never tried it…but I like the crusty top layer of baked mac-n-cheese so I would probably like it deep fried.

Sounds like a 911 dish. They’re the best ones  ;D

Oh my… This is going to be added to our household menu this week!

Another convert  ;D

The secret is to chill it first so it holds together. By the time the batter is done the cheesiness has melted into god like goodness.

I’m more concerned about the term “fancy pants” restaurant that serves fried mac and cheese. :-\ I mean fried mac and cheese is alright in my book but fancy? If one is required to wear pants then I just can’t enjoy my fried mac and cheese. ;D

How about Paula Deen’s recipe?

It’s LA… Everything in the city “core” is fancy pants.

The place also has an amazing beer list .

We do this.

We also do this: encase said mac-n-cheese in spicy sausage ball and deep fry.  wow.  mac-n-cheese stuffed meatballs?  win.

My cardiologist would hunt me down and lock me up if I ate that…

Me too, but we can dream

Added to our “Welcome to America” Thanksgiving dinner appetizer list.
