DFH Raison D'Extra

I’m not sure if a big stash of 2018 Raison D’Extra was let loose, or if the brewery holds on to it for years before they release it… But WOW!! I always enjoyed the D’Etra, but hadn’t had the D’Extra until recently. I honestly didn’t realize there were two versions until I opened the Extra and the booze practically knocked me over! (In a good way). Then I started looking into it. It is such a well-made beer.

If you can find some on your local shelf, I highly recommend it (for a celebration beverage, or just because). They don’t list the ABV, but it is rumored to be around 17%! And I don’t doubt that a bit. The booziness reminds me of a good port wine. Cheers

i miss DFH so much, very fun stuff and i can just about taste their 60 and 90 min IPAs, classic sweet and hard bitter.

obviously theyre still around but i havent seen them here period in the past 5 years

So way back in the day I would drink three beers a night. Could be three homebrews, could be commercial beer, but I never really worried about the size of the bottle. One night in 2005 I decided to finish the night with a 750ml bottle of what I thought was Raison d’Etre. You can likely see where this is heading. Turns out it was a December 2002 Raison d’Extra, and 20% ABV at the time. I passed out on the couch about halfway through the bottle.

Unfortunately, I’ve only ever seen their flagship Xty Minute IPAs (and sometimes SeaQuench) around here.

My wife will ask me if the beer I’m having fairly late in the evening is a “sacrificial beer”

I made a similar mistake the first time I tried World Wide Stout. I had no idea it was in the 18% range, until I tried to stand up after finishing a bottle of it. Worth every stagger, though. WWS is a phenomenal beer. I’ll have to hunt down some D’Extra next time I’m in a store with a good selection. Outside of 120-minute, every big beer I’ve had from DFH has been a winner.

Hahaha… I bet!

I can’t remember the last time I had WWS, however I picked up a bottle of “Wake Up WWS” while in Chicago for Dark Lord Day this weekend! I know it has coffee and maple syrup, and I believe one or two more things. Looking forward to it!
