Dunk Sparge and Carbonation

A double question for your consideration.

Recently, I was researching 1 gallon bathes and came over the term, dunk sparging. It seemes like a straight forwaerd process. Has anyone used this before, what are your thoughts?

Also, carbonation drops? For or against!

Dunk sparging works, but you’ll get lower efficiency than a pour over sparge. For me, pout over is easy enough that I don’t do dunk.

I have never had good results with carb drops. Perhaps others have.

Curious as to the why and how of “dunk sparging”? Is this BIAB? If so, just mash in a full volume of water and there’s no need to sparge.

I don’t bottle often, but when I do it’s with carb drops. They always work fine for me. Could I get better, more accurate carbonation with precise sugar solutions? Maybe. But simple always wins for me, especially when the results are perfectly acceptable.

Yeah, it’s where you take the grain bag and dunk it in a pot of hot water.

Got it. I never quite understood the idea of sparging with BIAB unless the kettle is not large enough to handle a full volume of mash water. In my experience, sparging to hit full volume won’t get me any better efficiency than had I just mashed in full volume to begin with. But I’ll acknowledge that I might be misunderstanding the OP’s point.

Thanks for the recommendation. Trying to follow the original recipe to the letter sometimes keeps logic out of the picture, so having an acceptable-sized container for mashing should take that concern away. Are there any concerns with avoiding the sparging process?

If you can full volume mash and are comfortable with hitting your numbers, I can’t see any concerns by not sparging. I’m no expert so I’m all ears if someone believes otherwise.

Hi, I have tried non all-in-one BIAB mashes in the past, complicated sparges and IMHO - the ~$2 to $4 extra I spend on grain by doing Denny’s easy batch sparge in a cooler is worth the significantly lower time and effort by far. I don’t anticipate changing this method for at least another ? 20 years

and forgot to add - because this is the default system for so many people i think almost every homebrew store now has a ready to install igloo cooler SS braid and ball valve manifold you can just buy and install without tracking down all the parts.
