Experimental Brewing Episode 5

After beating down some server issues, Episode 5 is ready to go!  In Episode 5 - Denny and Drew look back at the Brew Year’s Resolutions where we’ve had a bunch of feedback from listeners. We talk in the pub about the latest in acquisitions with the sweet spicy addition of hypocrisy - throw in a little competition and Denny’s soon to be appearance in Vail.

After that we return to the lab to present our second experiment. This time we’re exploring if throwing hops into a whirlpool steep at a lower temperature (120F) makes a qualitative difference in the beer over throwing them in at the “new” recommended temperature of 170F. In theory, 120F should preserve more of the volatile aromatic compounds we care about, but does it actually matter?

Back to the Bay Area we go with a pint at Oakland’s very lovely Trappist where we talk with Nick Impellitteri of the Yeast Bay about his unique take on a yeast company and what he truly enjoys in regards to the little critters. He’s got some fun directions he’s hoping to take things and who knows - they may be future cross collaborations to happen!

Finally we take your questions, Denny provides a little lesson in French and Drew tells us about the latest gadget he’s gotten in his ill advised attempts to explode his heart via caffeine consumption.

How about it, our fellow scientists - Are you ready for some hopping?!?

Really enjoying th episodes.  Keep them coming.  I’m going to have sign up for Patreon…

I hope to listen tomorrow morning during a brew session.  These are easy listening, but will you be doing anything with video, like Drew’s video of his club’s troubleshooter segment?

Who the hell wants to look at me?

We do hope to be producing some video for Brewcribs (check it out if you haven’t) but nothing at this point.

Listened last night while watching hockey and working up a recipe…another good podcast, guys. Interesting tidbits - the Yeast Bay microbiologist’s suggestion to not worry about mixed fermentations, i.e., just roll with it on repitching cultures, was nice to hear.  There had been some local debate among the “sours guys” on whether you had to/should start out again with a certain laboratory produced microbiota balance to be sure you would get similar results.  I thought not and repitch with wild abandon, but was curious to hear from a pro - so that was particularly helpful.

Glad ya got some useful info from it!

I sure did. Going to try sous vide eggs in my mash next brewday

Now I’m intrigued.

Yeah, I was thinking about that too.

I can’t believe Denny has never heard Motorhead.

I might have, but as far as I know I haven’t.  Not my type of music.  Plus, having been in the musoc biz fpr 50 years I don’t listen to a lot of music any more.  Just reminds me of work.

I seriously can’t be the only one wanting to hear Denny jam out Ace of Spades on the Uke?

The Original

One of many Uke covers

C’mon - it would be an awesome birthday gift. Hint Hint.

That could be the greatest ukele cover in history. He needs to wear a hat like Lemmy for it.  ;D

And a huge mole. And, while we’re at it, you need a giant fan the size of a jet turbine blowing in your face while you’re playing it.

I like that Denny’s reason for not knowing Motorhead is that he “doesn’t listen to much music anymore”, as if he hasn’t heard them because their a bunch of up and coming whippersnappers… ;D

Well Denny is old and wouldn’t remember when Motorhead launched because he was too busy living the rock and roll lifestyle to remember anyway!
