i finally got around to building a mash tun and will be taking it for a spin tomorrow. i’ve been previously doing biab so i have a question about my new mash/sparge volumes.
i am making an ipa and am planning on 1.5qt/lbs for my mash.
am i on target? i feel like i am but just figured a double check wouldn’t hurt with a new process for me.
I like it at 1.6 qt up to 2 qt if it’ll fit in the tun depending on recipe etc…
For your first run you could keep it on the thinner side and throttle back the flow a bit after the grain bed sets. YMMV If you start with a trickle and then open it a bit more you’ll see about the time it sets is when the line fills all the way on it’s own but you’ll also still see some chaff for about a quart or two. Run it too hard and you’ll compact the bed with gallons of wort on top.
If that happens just stop, stir up the mash and start all over again. No biggie.
so i didn’t see your post until just now weaz. downloading now.
i just finished a great brew and bottle day!
had a lot of fun using/learning a new technique. my volumes were off a little but i figure it wasn’t gonna be perfect the first time out. they weren’t off by much so i know i’m on the right track. can’t wait to brew again monday!
not sure why i waited so long to build a mash tun.
