How often is recertification by hydrostatic testing required on CO2 gas bottles?
I think it is 10 years.
Actually, it is required every five years I believe.
- And for those of us who bought new and it only ever sat in our kegerators it’s total crap. Just a way to snag another $50 from us.

5 years, unless it has a star stamped on it then it’s ten years.

What does the star indicate?
Indicates it is a newer spun steel tank, thereby only requiring recerts every 10 yrs.
Which is yet another reason to swap instead of fill . . .

10 years on a steel cylinder; 5 years on an aluminum one. In Las Vegas, anyway. Not sure if it’s a local or national code. But mine was so pitted and corroded that it got condemned on visual inspection alone. Never made it to the water jacket. :-\
Is the date stamped on the bottle the expiration date or the test date? I have a 20lb steel bottle with a bunch of dates on it dating back to the 1970’s, the latest date on it is 08/03 (assuming August, 2008). Inbetween the 08 and the 03 are little tiny numbers 08 and 13. Does this mean the certification was done in August 2003 and that it expires in August 2013?
