Is PBW safe?

Is it okay to submerge my hands in PBW while cleaning when mixed according to the label? There’s a warning on the side about skin contact, but there’s also one on StarSan and I heard a rep from FiveStar say StarSan is completely safe when mixed appropriately. Thanks

IME, PBW is completely safe to put your hands in.  I’ve done it thousands of times and my hands are still there!

With prolonged exposure, your hands will likely dry, crack & flake.
Rubber gloves are always a good idea…

(But, I never use 'em.)

My hands are already dried, cracked and flaked so I’ll never notice the difference  ;D

I use rubber gloves when removing labels from beer bottles. It is listed as a skin irritant on the MSDS. I’ve gotten splashed on my hands many times while washing kegs with no problem but I avoid dipping my hands in it. Minimal contact is not a problem, but I like to avoid intentional exposure.

Here’s the MSDS.

A few years ago on the brewing network a guy from five star drank star san…

Is he still alive?

If you’re afraid of StarSan, you’d probably better stay away from Coca Cola.

PBW is safe to your skin and clothing when used as recommended.

I guess YMMV here - it dries my hands out something terrible. If you get some on your hands wash it off immediately. I would recommend leaving your hands soaking for prolonged periods.

StarSan makes my skin itch like mad if I expose my hands to it too much.  It’s certainly not pleasant to drink, in my opinion.

I don’t have a problem with star san much. It doesn’t seem to have any affect on my hands. Another thing i was thinking about this AM - PBW works so much better when hot. I never use it under 120 degrees. That may be why it bothers some peoples hands and not others if some people are using it cool.

I’ve never had any issue with either product.  I will agree that I wouldn’t choose to mix drinks with Star San but I have never been concerned when it comes to incidental ingestion.

My hands get very dry just from washing things up (dishes, clothes, brewing equipment).  I’ve always just assumed it was the detergents and left most of that work to my slaves, uh, I mean my children.

don’t get it in your eye though, it hurts  (i’m not winking, that’s just what i look like for a couple hours each time i splash it in my eye)

actually I just tasted starsan on my last brew day, something viscous was on my table apparently the bottle fell over and the cap wasnt tight.  It tasted like phosphoric acid…go figure.
