Island Mist fruit wine kits

Has anyone ever tried one of these? Label Peelers has them 30% off today, since Winexpert is instituting minimum pricing starting tomorrow. I wasn’t thinking of brewing one straight-up, but rather using them as a base for a light, carbonated melomel (in the vein of B Nektar’s Zombie Killer/Kill all the Golfers/etc.). I’m just wondering if these are OK, or if they’re lousy Boone’s Farm ripoffs.

I have made a few of them. They are quite tasty for what they are. I would agree that they are similar to Boone’s Farm, although I think they taste better. They end up around 6% ABV and are sweet. For the most part the base wine is not very good. The flavor pack that you add after fermentation is what gives them their sweet, fruity flavor. If I were making a melomel I would rather use good quality fruit or fruit juice for the fruit flavor. Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Brandon

I was thnking of getting 2 of the pricier kits for pyments, and one of the Island Mist ones.  The one with Blackberry/Cab. and the eclipse Syrah, and a Chardonay.

I cheat. I add soda water and ice to my regular melomels in summer. I also make sangria out of them.
