JaDeD SS chiller?

This is probably a Denny question.  Is there/will there be a stainless version of the JaDeD 3-coil ICs?  Does any manufacturer have such a product?  I’m thinking about a stainless chiller as a possible future upgrade, but if there’s ever going to be one built on this general design I’ll sit tight and wait.

I think I saw an ad for one on FB yesterday.  Have you checked their website?

Nothing listed on the website as of last night, but there was a little out of focus pic of something suspiciously shiny and the words “coming soon,” nothing else.  I figured you’d have the advance scoop on their products.  If you’ve seen an ad, I’ll just keep watching the website.

I like the idea of SS for ease of  cleaning and being non reactive, but it is slower to chill than copper so I’ve never considered it a practical alternative.  I figure their 3 coil design should help mitigate that, and now that I can recirculate ice water, the less efficient heat exchange should no longer be a deal breaker.

About 85% as effective, as else equal.

They have a large in focus pic on their FB page of an SS chiller that says coming soon.

Cool!  Maybe “soon” means in time for Santa to throw one on the sleigh for me!  [emoji3]

I’d bet that’s the plan.  I’ll try to remember to contact Clay for details

Saw that a former Jaded employee has split off and started a different company. They announced a ss tri-coil chiller coming soon also.

I wondered what was the loss between the 2.

Copper is a much better conductor of heat. The thermal circuit is the condition from wort to chiller, chiller, chiller to water. The transfer to the liquids controls the equivalent resistance. In other words, those are the big resistors, to the metal is a small resistor, so making that bigger or smaller has only a little change in performance.

Word is, the JaDeD product is a stainless version of the Hydra, and will indeed be out “soon.”  Sounds pretty attractive to me.

I knew copper was better. All I can say is between the JaDeD Hydra and the Blichmann Hellfire, my brewdays are much shorter.

Why are people interested in SS?  Copper is more efficient.

SS is about 85% as effective, all else equal.

SS is more durable. You will get fewer metal ions from SS, so less staling from Fenton reactions. Depending on commodity prices, SS can be cheaper than copper (you have to check).

Disclaimer. I bought a coil of 1/2 inch copper when it was cheaper. I used Brewtan-B to chelate the metal ions.

Updated information is that the SS Hydra is now scheduled for release sometime in January.

My “beta” version arrived today.  I’ll give a thorough report after I use it, hopefully on Sunday!

Sexy!

It’s the blingiest thing I own! [emoji23]

Any ideas what they’re going to charge for it?

I kind of wish they’d do an SS counterflow.

AFAIK about $200 ($199.99 or whatever,) so a bit more than the copper one, but not outrageously so.

I also want to make it clear that I did not get this for free, I’m not obligated to, or being compensated by, them in any way, so my review will be completely objective.  I did get a slight discount, because it is a pre sale, beta model.  I just made some inquiries,  and was lucky to be put in touch with them and get on a list.

There are some SS counterflow chillers out there, Wilbur, like Stout, but I don’t know anything about them firsthand.  I have no interest in counterflow.  I like the sanitary aspect of an IC, and being able to leave all the break in the kettle and not chew it up in a pump.
