kegging for twerps

I’ve taken to spraying my posts with starsan when I attach the disconnect on account of sometimes they are hard to get on and off.

Maybe I should throw some lube on those o-rings…

Just a tiny amount is needed. Just dab your finger tip and apply.

You’ll want to use the 5x11 mm beverage tubing for beer dispensing. The 8 mm is too large for short-draw draft systems. For the gas connections, you can use whatever size is convenient, but there’s no need for the expensive beverage tubing. Thin-walled vinyl tubing can handle serving pressures no problem.

OK, thanks for being metric. Ordered the 5x11mm.

Keg lube is messy. I prefer wearing a pair to latex free exam gloves, spritzed with starsan, to apply it. Fingers just don’t seem sanitary enough, and I just toss the gloves and associated mess when done.

I suppose that vaseline might work as an option, unverified, but according to Shallow Hal it safe in your eyes…

I died a thousand deaths over lunch as I went to the supermarket and bought an intimate lubricant, together with 307 junk items that I do not need to cover up the purchase.

The good news is that the pH is on the label: 5.5. So I don’t need to measure and can plug that straight into Bru’n Water!

That’s fantastic. Best laugh all week on this forum. It’s kind of a variation on the guy buying Trojans along with a dozen things he doesn’t need or want, to look less obvious.

I’m pretty sure KY isn’t going to help as it is water based and will evaporate rather quickly.

I use the same goop that I use to lube the O-rings on my home water filter. It’s a bit thicker/stickier than vaseline, but it is silicone-based. Regular vaseline is petroleum based and is probably a bad idea as well, as it may weaken your o-rings over time.

If you wanted to use personal lubricant, you might be better off with a silicone-based lube rather than water.

I think someone should put Astroglide on their kegs and report back.

Are you saying I need to go back to that supermarket?  :-[

I’m pretty sure this stuff is all keg lube is: http://www.homedepot.com/p/DANCO-0-5-oz-Silicone-Faucet-Grease-88693/203193536

But yes, I’d go back and ask the clerk for his advice on personal lubricants, while repeatedly insisting that it’s for your kegs.

You should walk right up to the counter and ask to exchange it for a different type. Do it very loudly so everyone in the store knows about it, too

I’ve used keg lube as faucet grease.  Glad I had it at the time.

Another twerp question: how do I connect the tubes? I have this kind of regulator: CO2-regulator 3 bar with 2 outputs • Brouwland - do I need an 8 mm tube-holder for the regulator side (https://www.brouwland.com/en/our-products/brewing/beer-kegs-and-accessories/soda-kegs-and-accessories/d/tube-holder-8mm-nut-for-soda-keg-connector) and a 4 mm tube holder at the keg side (tube-holder 4mm + nut for soda-keg connector • Brouwland). Plus 2 4mm tube holders for the beer tube?

So now I have the kegs, the regulator, the quick-connects, the CO2 cylinder, the tubes. Do I need anything else besides the tube-holders, the taps (and another type of lube  :P)?

Thanks in advance!

Sanitation and purging head space for sure-  I was super timid when I first started kegging-  Think of it as 1 big bottle with a fancy lid.  Once you purge the headspace and get some CO2 into the keg- you pretty much cant screw up the beer unless the keg wasn’t properly sanitized.

Welcome  to a better world!

You have the right idea, but your links don’t look like the same size threads, and the site doesn’t give the thread specifications, so I don’t know if those are the right parts.

Edit: I think I found them. For the gas lines you want either 058.086.6 + 058.092.4, or 058.099.3 + 058.094.0 depending on tubing diameter. Sucks that you can’t just buy a barbed regulator and disconnects and save the €13 per keg.

At your suggestion I bought the 5x11 tubing. So I should get the 4 mm stuff? Man, this is tough. Why don’t they explain on the website?

It looks like you have to get either 4 mm or 8 mm gas tubing, at least to buy exclusively from these guys. You might be able to do 4 mm barbs with 5 mm beverage tubing, but use a clamp and carefully check it for leaks.

This is all assuming those conventions/measurements are in fact different. Maybe your “5mm” tubing fits on a “4mm” barb. I don’t know anything about European draft systems.

Sorry to bother you, hopefully, one last time on this:
I found those in Germany, I guess those are ok?

Plus, this kind of tap without a hose, is it recommendable?

Again, thanks for your help!

If they’re the same threads as the outlets of your CO2 regulator, then yes, but again, not knowing that thread size I can’t say. I wouldn’t personally order anything based off of a fuzzy picture.

I wouldn’t use a faucet without lines, but that looks like a flow-control, so maybe it would work. I know there have been a few discussions of that general type of faucet, so maybe someone with experience will weigh in.
