Yes. It’s essentially just another name for Oktoberfest. It’s a malty but not sweet amber lager of about 5-5.5% alcohol, no hops aroma, little or no hop flavor, and just enough bitterness to support the malt. Most especially, it should be elegant and easy to drink.
Drink a Spaten or Hacker-Pschorr O-fest and you’ll get the flavor profile. The BJCP description is a little misleading as far as hop flavor is concerned. The imported versions of these two beers and to a lesser extent, Pualaner, have a hop spiciness (Hallertauer or Tettnager) that the American versions are missing.
This is something so many people seem to miss. Too often, I hear maltiness associated with sweetness and that’s not necessarily the case. Drinking a good Ofest or a dunkel like Ayinger is a great way to learn about maltly flavors that aren’t sweet.
