mash tun size

I still don’t have the electric brewery up and running yet. In the meantime, I’m going to do some stove top mini batches. I’ve written a couple 2 gallon recipes that I can easily boil, then will add an additional gallon when I pitch for a total of a three gallon batch. My question is, will there be any negative consequences by mashing such a small amount in a 55qt mash tun? I’m looking at striking about 2.25 gallons. And for the record, my cooler is black and red. 8)

Not much thermal mass to retain heat as well as a large headspace, again making heat retention difficult. Just my thoughts, it will still function you may want to strike in higher with that expectation though

Makes sense. I’ll preheat it also.

I wouldn’t want to do that. Not sure if the shallow grain bed would interfere in some way. If you have a BIAB bag I’d just do that. Would be a lot easier, especially for such a small batch.
