Munich for Oktoberfest 2011

Before anyone becomes too envious, let me say that I will not be in Munich for Oktoberfest this year. But a friend of mine will and has been kind enough to offer to bring back some beer for me and a few others. So, I’m trying to get ideas. Given that he’s bringing back beer for several people, he’s asked that we all only pick one brand.  Can anyone suggest some really wunderbar Bavarian locals that are unavailable in the states?

I should also say that my friend speaks fluent German, having lived there for a number of years, and is pretty familiar with German beer styles/brands. There will be no “sprechen sie English?” :stuck_out_tongue:

Andechs Doppelbock Dunkel comes to mind.

Fresh Bavarian weissbier is hard to find here in the States.  It is amazing when it is young, and fades very quickly on it’s trip across the ocean.

Have him bring you this year’s Oktoberfest mass (1L ceramic stein).  They’re different every year.

I put this on the list.  My buddy said he’s been to the Andechs biergarten before and that it was one of the best he’d been to while living in Munich.

If he does not get down to Andechs, there is an Andechs bierstube in the Frauenkirke platz, other end from the towers with the onion domes.

For what it is worth, I just got back from Oktoberfest yesterday and had an amazing time. I have to agree the doppelbock dunkel at the Andech monastery was my favorite part of the trip. I was a little bit surprised that you could not order dunkels in the festival but that was my only disappointment.

I’d like to suggest the oldest beer brand in the world, needless to say it’s a Bavarian brand. The brand-name is “Weihenstephan” and was founded in 1050 a.d. Imagine that: This beer had been there for almost seven-hundred years before the United States were founded. You might find this beer in the United States since it is a globally marketed brand.
