OxyClean vs. PBW

Who uses Oxycelan over PBW? Any major differences other than cost?

I didn’t see the “Free” version available anymore. I thought that was the fragrance free version.

I have been mixing oxyclean with TSP substitute from the paint dept. of the hardware store.  I can’t remember exactly the proportions, 2:1 I think, but the info is available with a search.  It is much cheaper than PBW.

I use oxyclean free. Works great. Use hot water and give it a stir then soak over night usually

I use plain oxyclean. Normally get it at Costco. $1/lb or something insane like that.

Oxyclean and hot water does a great job.

+1

The only advantage I can see in using PBW is less need for rinsing.

+1. Two parts oxi to one part TSP substitute. Works great, especially at 160 degrees.

I have no idea why this would be the case especially since the main ingredient in PBW is an oxygen cleaner like (if not identical too) oxi clean…

i have attempted to use oxyclean before but it leaves a white film on everything and its hard to clean off. will adding TSP help with that? Also with changing the chemical composition of this is it possible to “etch” glass or not to be used on plastics, copper and what not? i have really hard water FYI

I don’t know either, but I see a lot more foaming with Oxyclean

I believe the main thing PBW has that OxiClean lacks is a chelator (a water softener), which explains the white film some people get. That said, I use OxiClean for nearly all my brewery cleaning. Using conditioned water avoids the film problem.

I use Oxiclean 90% of the time.  I find PBW to be marginally more effective, so from time to time I’ll use it instead,

I don’t know why it is (maybe different surfactants?), but I agree…PBW rinses more easily.

Denny, when you use Oxyclean, are you using it straight, or are you adding the TSP(?)

I think that’s what the TSP substitute does.

That is what I have read.

PBW is a higher quality product, but from my experience, oxyclean is good enough. The bit of extra rinsing is worth the cost savings.

I’ve also heard of folks using pure sodium percarbonate. It’s expensive, but I think less is needed for the same results.

Guess I just never noticed a problem rinsing oxi-clean.

Is one step the same as oxyclean?
