I’m flying into Philly in a week or so, but will need to wait ~3 hours for a ride. I figure I can entertain myself at the airport by finding a place to have some beers. On the other hand, I can catch a cab to Monk’s and wait for a ride there.
I’m leaning towards Monk’s over the airport bar, but any other recommendations?
The Devil’s Den is a winner. Try Nodding Head for their Berliner Weisse. The Farmer’s Cabinet has an extensive bottle list and an awesome cheese menu. Or if you like a brewery type…try Yard’s. The list goes on and on…
Thanks Ron. I might go to Nodding Head, the Berliner is really nice I had some here in 2006 when they came for WBC. Then again one of those other places could be a good choice too, I’m just looking for beers I haven’t had.
I guess it’s two weeks, the 27th. It’s a quick trip, my plane gets in Friday around 2:30PM, leaving Sunday afternoon. Most of the time will be spent with family in NJ, my father turns 70 that week.
Philly is a good place to have a beer layover. You can spend a lot longer than 3 hours. We used to go to the Michael Jackson tasting there and then hang out afterwards. Unfortunately I was never in any shape to remember the name of the places other than Noddingheads, which was always good solid beers and Monks which was always packed, but still good. My beer loving coworkers have suggested these to me when I was planning on going there:
Beware, security can be a b!tch at PHL from time to time. Depending on the time you might wish to jump to E (commuter) or A (International) terminal to clear security. From E there is a bus that drops you off at B terminal.
Thanks for these - I’ll have to do some research and pick a place or two to go. I don’t want to go bar hopping much since I have limited time. Probably only about 2 hours once get a pint in my hand.
Any of you guys up for grabbing a beer around 3:30 in Philly on 4/27?
Man! I’ll be there Friday the 20th until Monday morning. Couldn’t you rearrange your father’s birthday and come a week earlier?
We will be renting a car and stopping for lunch at Triumph downtown and then going to a couple museums before heading out to Bryn Athyn.
I’ve recently heard good things about South Philly Tap Room, which may be closer to the airport.
So did you make it to City Center from the airport?
We had good beers and a nice lunch at Triumph on Chestnut, just down the street from the Liberty Bell Park.
There sure are a lot of good gastropubs in Philly.
I did, I took a cab from PHL to Monk’s. I liked it, I had a couple of beers there - it is a nice place and I’m glad I went, but the draft beer list had nothing I couldn’t get here, Lost Abbey, Elysian, Chimay, De Ranke, Allagash. I still had time so I walked up the street to Nodding Head and had the sampler, they had a lot of good beers on tap. My brother’s plane got in early, so his wife picked him up and came up to the brewery, then we hung out and waited for traffic to clear up a bit. I’m glad i went there too.
