Yes I’m speculating. But it’s informed speculation, based on the fact that “cane sugar” is not generally taken to mean “white sugar” in the UK, but is the basis for most specialist brewing sugars here.

Ron has done a fair bit of research on the origins of Nut Brown Ales in general - it’s probably got little to do with nuts either as an ingredient or a flavour, just a combination of coloured-up mild meeting a romantic name from an old song.

Oh yeah.  You’re right.  Vanilla isn’t enough.  If it’s a cream ale, you’ve got to go all the way and add lactose as well.  ;D
