I don’t know if it’s late and I am not seeing straight, but one of the National Homebrew Competition recipes seems to be way off in IBU’s. It’s the Category 10 recipe on page 53, the American Ale. It lists 19 IBU’s but I am getting 73.2 in Beersmith!
The recipe lists:
1.2 oz Horizon at 13% for 60
1.09 oz Cascade at 6% for 10
1.09 oz Centennial at 9% for 10
1.09 oz Cascade whole hops at 6% at knockout
1.09 oz Centennial at 9% at knockout.
I’m getting over 40 IBU’s just for the Horizon hops alone. Can someone run the numbers and tell me if it’s me, or if there is a typo somewhere in the hop additions in the magazine.
I am thinking the typo has to be in the ounces listed because this is the Category 10 winner and American Amber Ale IBU range maxes out at 40, so 79 IBU’s is almost double what is recommended for category. Can’t seeing it winning gold for that far off. Maybe the 1.2 ounces of Horizon is suppose to .12?
Who said anything about having to be within category to win category? I know a guy who makes everything WAY too strong for the style and wins a lot in competitions because his beers have more flavor, more malt, more hops – more memorable to the judges. It’s cheating, yes, perhaps – but it’s also damned effective if you want to win in comps.
