Three years ago I got some inch thick slate slabs that were ripped out of where I work during renovations they were doing. They had been shower stalls. I figured I would use them in a patio or something. Instead I just fine shed with the help of my girlfriend’s son, turning them into countertops.
Very nice re-use and they look good
Looks really nice.
I have the same cabinets as you.
very nice. I’m planning cement for my counter tops. with sections of end grain wood block.
Sorry…kinda brings to mind hoof and mouth disease ![]()
Ha. They were outside at my house for three years so I’m at peace with that.
Nice work, Pete.
Great job! I have been looking for that very material as I prepare to update my 100 year old kitchen.
The DSotM cup adds a touch of class as well.

I read slate can go for $100/sq ft so we got lucky. I was surprised how well it cut with just a diamond blade for my skil saw and a hose for streaming water. It was HEAVY! The nice thing is once we clean it up (I’m going to wet sand it) we can use it as is, use a sealer that keeps a wet look (darker) or a sealant that doesn’t change the color. I can totally abuse it and just sand off any damage.
I think its awesome. I like that skilfully repuposed look.
