I’m out on a business trip, have basically a carry on. I’ve found a few regional beers I’d like to take back home for others to try and am wondering what others have done to bring it home. I’ve considered buying a small suitcase at a WalMart or grabbing a shipping box, some bubble wrap and running to the nearest UPS Store. Any other suggestions?
I’ve used checked baggage with no problem, well packed in the middle with clothes all around.
Same boat as Fred. I always check some beer and have yet to have any break. Just make sure and pack it well and don’t exceed the 50lb weight limit on your bag.
If you have time, UPS or FedEx will be cheaper than checking your bag.
Depending on who you fly with. Southwest is still free to check baggage.
I pack a collapsible duffel bag. If I come across beer that I want to bring back (which is most of the time), I pack it well and check it. I also have yet to have a bottle break.
Wrap the bottles with bubble wrap, pack with the dirty clothes inside a packing bag to catch any spills.

As you can see they foam did its job and saved the beer.
When I was 18 I went to Europe brought back a bottle of absinthe from Austria and a bottle of ice wine from St Gore Gremany. I just put it in my luggage with my clothes. Customs never checked me but that was be for 9-11.
Just flew back from PDX last night with 5 bombers and a pint glass in my bag. Stuffed into my stanky socks and packed in dirty clothes. No problems with breakage and no tag that said TSA searched my bag. This is how I usually bring beer back and have yet to have any issues.
+1 to bottles packed in dirty clothes. Had some port bottles make it back all the way from South Africa like that.

I have had good luck with the few times I had to check a suitcase with bottles wrapped in clothes. I have lately been checking a beverage shipper box with no problems; however, that was for taking beers out rather than back home so I didn’t have to hunt down a source for the box.
I have read to reports of tsa taking “Duty Free Liquids” just as the flyers were boarding the planes flying to the usa.
After this I’ll be looking into shipping my beer back from Belgium instead of risking the tsa taking it from checked luggage, yes this has happend to others even before the latest incident.
Sounds like a real pain in the ass. >:(
If tsa has its way you’ll be going thur the [u]strip search machines[/u] at every airport.

Well I’ll be going on my first international trip in late Feb - early March. Should be an, uh, interesting experience. :-\
I think if the TSA had their way, nobody would be able to fly.
Hate to say it but I told ya! in 3 wks body scans for all US-bound air passengers flying out of Schiphol airport.

I have been successful at bringing up to 36 bottles home in one trip from Holland. Proper packaging techniques are required. Make sure each bottle is individually wrapped and placed in such a way that it will not move around. Also you want to make sure that the TSA or foreign security screeners cant screw it up. There is nothing worse than taking an hour to pack your bag and then some uneducated (in the ways of packing) or unappreciative bone head unpacks your stuff and just jams it back in the suitcase, creating a giant CF or worse yet a pile of broken glass and wet smelly clothes. I have carried over 200 bottles of homebrew and commercial beer around the world and the worst thing that happened was some wet jeans due to caps that were not crimped properly or the swing cap got pushed open on the heel of my shoe. good luck. I also carry a second bag in my large bag just in case I see something that I must have in my collection. With baggage fees the way they are right now this is problematic though.
Yeah, I brought back a bunch of 750ml and bombers from the East Coast along with a couple of books from a Borders closing down a location and I’ll be damned if my bag wasn’t 20 pounds over the limit…Whoops! :o
That $75 fee might not have been worth the good beer I can’t normally get and obviously the discount on the books wasn’t worth it. :-[
