Happy Chanukah!

on the second night of chanukah my true love gave to me… socks… again… ooh and a pencil case! :-\

The winter solstice is tonight at 12:30 Eastern Time.  So today and tomorrow are pretty much equal as to being the shortest days.  Not that one can tell here for all of the overcast.

Merry Christmas one and all.  Have a Happy New Years.  Brew some great beer in 2012.

We’ve made it around the bend.  The days are getting longer again.  I feel better already!

Ho Ho Ho!

Can one even notice the change in the days length there?  Just asking, never been that far south.

Yeah, ‘made it around the bend’ for Carl means instead of 11.8 hours of daylight, he can get back to the standard 11.9.

And where you live the swings are much more noticeable.  Lived at the 50 parallel (50.08), and the short winter days were made up for with the long days in summer.

Down here at 19⁰ north lattitude the sunset is at around 5:45 for winter solstice and 7:10 for the summer solstice (we don’t do daylight savings time here).  That’s at sea level.  You can gain a few extra minutes by heading up to the summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea.  They are almost 14,000 feet high.  (thats 4267m for you metric types)

Shortest day 10:56:34
Longest day  13:19:21

You know that the earliest sunrises and latest sunsets (or visa versa) don’t happen on the solstices, yah?

According to the Mayan calendar we have started our last orbit.   :o

Where I grew up summer solstice is a 15h 33m day compared to a 8h 50m day on winter solstice.

The Mayan calendar ends in 2012.  Our calendar ends on January December 31 (every year).  That was a massive brain fart.  :frowning:

According to the Mayans we have started out last orbit of this cycle.  The next cycle starts in 2013.  I’m not really too concerned about the world ending on 12/21/12.  My youngest brother, on the other hand, is a bit more worried about that date.  He turns 40 that day.  ;D

Paul

Today we’re getting maybe 8.5 hours of daylight.  Maybe.

But that means when the NHC is here next year for the summer solstice we’ll have more like 16 hours of daylight - sunrise is 5:10 AM, sunset is 9:10 AM.  And even after sunset it won’t be dark until 10. ;D

Not that anyone will notice because they will be enjoying pro brewers night, or club night, or the banquet.

I’m gonna be in Iceland next month… about 5 hours of daylight…

There’s a lot of awesome volcanic activity up there.  Lucky you!

Gonna hit at least one brewery too, gotta try Iceland’s finest! Hoping to see some aurora borealis, too!

Enjoy the hákarl!

Wow…short days up there…enjoy!

Check this out.

A guy at work just sent this one around:

A married couple had been out shopping at the mall for most of the afternoon.
*  Suddenly, the wife realized that her husband had “disappeared”.*
*  The somewhat irate spouse called her mate’s cell phone and demanded: “Where the hell are you”?*

*  Husband: “Darling you remember that jewelry shop where you saw the diamond necklace and totally fell in love with it and I didn’t have money that time and said Baby it’ll be yours one day.”*

*  Wife, with a smile blushing: “Yes, I remember that my Love.”*

*  Husband: “Well, I’m in the bar next to that shop.”*

Merry Christmas!
