Shot Across The Bow...

I don’t think old-timers would be impressed by the claim that it’s ‘brewed the hard way’. That, beechwood aging, the imagery, the text - I think that was all squarely aimed at a 21-35 market of people who want quality and camaraderie. I have a huge group of friends who are like this. They homebrew a bit, enjoy brewpubs and beer bars, but 90% of the time they drink Miller High Life. They want cheap easy drinking beer, but they want to be drinking the best cheap, easy drinking beer.

I had a bud not too long ago. All I could taste was the apple ester. Damn you Homebrew forums!

Really??? I think “brewed the hard way” and the old, worn out “beachwood aged” slogan would totally work better for old timers. The new kids I know always say they don’t want to do it the hard way. “Work smarter not harder” they all say. I assume this is so they can continue to use their smart phone in one hand while they work with the other.

Don’t confuse what they want to spend their money on with where they want to work.

Yeah, I don’t get that either. It seems to me that better ingredients, more labor–or at least actual manual labor–goes into each pint of craft beer than into a macro. But again they aren’t aiming this at us, folks who know how much work goes into brewing at any and every level. They are doing the same thing that the auto companies’ ads during the Super Bowl were doing, creating an image. And image doesn’t have any thing to do with reality–neither does anything else on Television these days, including, dare I say it, football.

Now you’re confusing me.

In other news…

That was fast!

My shriveled grinch heart for big beer just grew two sizes.  [emoji106]
Also, Bud needs to ensure their own images don’t get leaked!

Flying samples to St Louis every day seems … fussy.

I will admit I yelled at the commercial when it came on.  I just yelled bullshit over and over until my wife said shut up!  Personally, I will not drink Bud or other macro beers.  Don’t care for the taste and I save my beer calories for something I actually enjoy.  I also don’t agree with their tactics - marketing, squashing the small guys, etc.  I am not bothered nor do I care if other people drink AB, etc.  It’s their money, so spend it where you want.  I choose to homebrew and buy craft beer.

Do I think Bud is crap?  No.  It’s a well made lager, but with no real flavor IMO.  I would rather have a water than a BudMillerCoors beer.

AB is going nowhere, but the decline in sales has to be concerning to them. More and more younger people are trying craft beer early on.  There is a movement across the country to buy things like beer, food and other goods locally.  Younger people are part of this movement which is definitely hurting the sales of Bud.

It’s Dick Cantwell complaining about the ad and then an interview about the Elysian buyout. You can get around the paywall if you Google the article title – links from Google go straight through

Awesome!

Foam in the mustache at 1:23 is me on a daily occurrence.

That’s a good one.  Wonder if AB realizes that ad probably hurt them more than it helped.  My guess is, they probably don’t care.

Very cool that craft beer is striking back.

When you consider the massive volume difference is business that they do vs the entire craft industry I think the ad helped them w their target demo.

I can relate to the ad in many ways.  Beer isn’t supposed to be a lifestyle.  It’s supposed to be something that enhances one’s lifestyle.  I believe that Fritz Maytag hit the nail squarely on the head when he stated that what makes beer special is that it has always been a common man’s drink.

There’s no such thing as bad publicity.
