Tobacco

My Grandpa had a farm in southwest Kentucky and raised tobacco, livestock, and tons of vegetables. I spent several summers there. Remember that smell well. I remember the hard work, too.

I get tobacco notes from some English hop varieties on occasion (EKG’s and Challenger in particular), but it’s usually a background note rather than the dominant flavor. Maybe a light dose of black or oolong tea along with some spanish cedar may approximate a tobacco flavor?

I’d have to check my notes, but I do remember one of my British-style beers being very reminiscent of pipe-tobacco. I remember using a lot of fuggles, might have even dry hopped with them.

Isn’t alcohol poisonous?

Dunno what it says about me, but I knew exactly what you meant.  Thems what looks like what Clint smoked in the old spaghetti westerns.

One of my favorite flavor-layers in Grahams Six Grape Ruby Oporto is tobacco.  I can see it working in a malt focused beer: Porter, Stout, etc.  It would be an interesting exercise to think through all the malt and hop flavors to make it work together.

And count me as one who really enjoys the flavor and aroma of premium tobacco smoke.  I don’t inhale, but do enjoy puffing on cigars.

So far, I see two camps forming.

Camp “I like tobacco notes in beer if they don’t actually come from tobacco”

and Camp Barf.

Neither camp seems to encourage adding tobacco to beer.

Now why does that only strengthen my resolve?

Beechnut Aged?

Almost choked on my coffee. Good stuff.

So, if you wanted barnyard notes, would you dry-horse?

please explain to a twerp from Antwerp :frowning:

Beechnut is a brand of chewing tobacco here in the states. Brings back images of old farts and rednecks chewing and spitting.

Reminds me of high school baseball practice. It was cool to have a big ol chaw of Levi Garrett, Redman, or Beechnut in your cheek… While terribly trying to hide it from the coaches.

He added Beechnut.

… Or we can can this said tobacco beer and call it… “Prince Albert In a Can”

Definitely part of both groups, maybe more so the former, but I’m very interested in this if you do try to experiment.

Please, don’t encourage him. It’s easy when there’s a ocean between the two of you.

A country boy can survive…

And I’m not sure how it’s marketed over in Europe, but “Beechwood aged” is the tag line of the King of Beers. He’s a punny man, that Jim

Want to have some fun? Clean out a chewing tobacco tin and fill it full of tootsie roll after running it through a pencil sharpener. When you’re around a bunch of the guys chew and spit a couple of time then chew and swallow the next couple of chews.

Awesome! I will have to file this away for hunting season this year…

Yes, i can easily imagine him getting hardened wiseguys on their knees with just a few wisecracks.
