My Grandpa had a farm in southwest Kentucky and raised tobacco, livestock, and tons of vegetables. I spent several summers there. Remember that smell well. I remember the hard work, too.
I get tobacco notes from some English hop varieties on occasion (EKG’s and Challenger in particular), but it’s usually a background note rather than the dominant flavor. Maybe a light dose of black or oolong tea along with some spanish cedar may approximate a tobacco flavor?
I’d have to check my notes, but I do remember one of my British-style beers being very reminiscent of pipe-tobacco. I remember using a lot of fuggles, might have even dry hopped with them.
One of my favorite flavor-layers in Grahams Six Grape Ruby Oporto is tobacco. I can see it working in a malt focused beer: Porter, Stout, etc. It would be an interesting exercise to think through all the malt and hop flavors to make it work together.
And count me as one who really enjoys the flavor and aroma of premium tobacco smoke. I don’t inhale, but do enjoy puffing on cigars.
Reminds me of high school baseball practice. It was cool to have a big ol chaw of Levi Garrett, Redman, or Beechnut in your cheek… While terribly trying to hide it from the coaches.
Want to have some fun? Clean out a chewing tobacco tin and fill it full of tootsie roll after running it through a pencil sharpener. When you’re around a bunch of the guys chew and spit a couple of time then chew and swallow the next couple of chews.
