Much has been written about water for beer brewing and for soft drinks but little is readily available for distilling. Here are a few pointers for quality of the water and treatments generally regarded for distilled spirits manufacture. There are three separate waters used in whisky (read also for other spirits here) production: mashing, cooling and reduction (or dilution-water).

I heard a little bit about the story but haven’t had the time to read the whole article.  This won’t do; looks like we need to convince everyone to give up soda.  Guess I’ll find the article and read it first
