2010 National Homebrew Competition

Hi all,

The Rules & Regulations and the regional maps have been posted on the AHA web site.  Please note that there were state changes in several regions.  The changes are as follows:

VA moves into the East Region (judging in OH)
MO & AR move into the South Region (judging in GA)
NV & UT move into the Northwest Region (judging in WA)

The regional changes are marked with “(new)” in the list below.

East Region: KY, MD, OH, VA (new), WV, and Washington, D.C.
                        Judging in Zanesville, OH
Great Lakes Region: IL, IN, and MI
                        Judging in Indianapolis, IN (new)
Midwest Region: IA, KS, MN, ND, NE, SD, and WI
                      Judging in Middleton, WI (new)
Northeast Region: CT, DE, MA, ME, NH, NJ, NY, PA, RI, and VT
                      Judging in Philadelphia, PA
Northwest Region: AK, HI, ID, MT, NV (new), OR, UT (new), WA, and WY
                      Judging in Seattle, WA (new)
Old West Region: CO, OK, and TX
                      Judging in Denver, CO (new)
South Region: AL, AR (new), FL, GA, LA, MO (new), MS, NC, SC, and TN
                      Judging in Atlanta, GA
Southwest Region: AZ, Southern CA (see CA map), and NM
                      Judging in San Diego, CA
West Region: Northern CA (see CA map)
                      Judging in Lodi, CA

The online registration system will be active at the end of February.  The Entry Deadline is March 22 - April 1, 2010.  Judging takes place April 10-25.

Hi everyone,

The Online Registration for the 2010 National Homebrew Competition is open: http://www.brewingcompetition.com/NHC/nhc.php.

Register and pay for your entries online until 5 p.m. (Pacific time) on Thursday, April 1, 2010.

The shipping/drop-off window is Monday, March 22 to Thursday, April 1, 2010, again 5 p.m. Pacific time.

The ALES club competition is indeed the Canadian qualifying competition for the AHA’s National Homebrew Competition.  All Canadian entrants should visit the link you posted and submit their entries to the qualifying competition.  All competition details are available at www.alesclub.com and http://www.homebrewersassociation.org/pages/competitions/national-homebrew-competition/participate.

Looking forward to entering for the first time :slight_smile:

Been brewing largely on my own for about 8-9 years, going to enter a cherry porter in the category 20 that turned out jus awesome :slight_smile:

I entered one beer tonight and cant enter another.

This is quite a bummer as I have 5 other entries bottled up.

Is this the first year a region has reached its quota?

Hi everyone,

Two regions have hit the maximum number of entries (750) as of Monday afternoon.  Those regions (Midwest and Northeast) are now restricted from taking any further entries. The entry limit rule was decided upon by the AHA Governing Committee’s Competition Sub-committee as the best way to ensure the judging integrity for the competition.

Each year I examine the entries on a state-by-state basis with some additional criteria, to adjust the regions based on a prediction of the entries they are likely to receive.  Unfortunately this year, the adjustments for the Midwest region (location of the Conference in June) were not enough to prevent the entry limit from kicking in.  The entry totals from this year will be taken into account for next year’s competition, and the regions will be realigned as needed to prevent the limit from being reached again, if possible.

I’m sorry if you were caught by the entry limit this year, and I wish you better luck next year.

This is just an inquiry, not a complaint… but why do the Canadians get an extra week to get their entries in? Inquiring minds would like to know?  ???

Hi Jeff,

As one of the largest competitions in Canada, the ALES Homebrew Open competition is the annual homebrew competition of the Ale & Lager Enthusiasts of Saskatchewan club. The schedule for this competition, the money to run it, and the entry fees are all determined by the ALES club.

This competition acts as the qualifying competition for all Canadian entries to the Final Round of the AHA’s National Homebrew Competition (NHC).  In order for winners in this competition to advance to the Final Round of the NHC, the entry must have scored 30 or more points, the same criteria as for the winners of the First Round in all 9 of the US regional competitions.  Canadian entries that advance must then pay an entry fee for the Final Round of the NHC, and they must ship their entries and maneuver Customs in order to compete.

OK,  How do I know if my entry shipped last week will be part of the NHC?  I am hopefull that if the web site accepted it, and it arrives on time that all will be well, but I cannot say for sure that I am sure at this point.  If the web site accepted the entry before you closed the midwest competition, will it be judged?
