Allergic reaction to sours?!

Hey y’all! First post here and a brand new member thanks to a gift membership from the holiday season. Quick question:

Does anyone have any experience with themselves or those you know having an allergic reaction to unfiltered, un-pasteurized sours? We are trying to narrow down an allergic reaction my wife had that started on NYE and are now suspecting a delicious bottle of jolly pumpkin as the culprit. The kicker is that she has a known penicillin allergy.

Thanks in advance for your input!

Dan and Meg

what exactly was the reaction she had?

if she has a known penicillin allergy I would be willing to bet that the sour was the culprit. I personally have an aversion to sours. I know it’s not the same thing but thought I’d put it out there.

Welcome to the forum!

I have a known penicillin allergy.  Not allergic to sours.

I judged on a best of show panel where one of the judges was allergic to sours.  She went ahead and took one for the panel, but you could see her face getting flush with redness and puffiness within a short period of time.

Since penicillins are strong inhibitors of lactobacillus, I doubt that there’s any present in sour beers. But there are so many compounds being produced by all the bugs in a mixed culture. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if a handful of them are allergenic to some people.

Me too!

Thanks for the feedback and welcome. The reaction started as general itching, then became swollen eyelids and a pretty gnarly rash. Dr. gave her a steroid injection and a short course of meds and it all cleared up. Guess I should dump the 2 gallons I pitched the dregs into before midnight.

Thanks again!

Any chance it was something else?

Unfortunately, we looked back at her food intake for several days and still suspect the sour.
