Anyone ever try Distillers Turbo yeast for Beer?

;D ;D
How bout you Fred Bonjour high gravity king???  Well?>??

18%???

Yes

Don’t

And why would you do that?

If you’re trying to get beer in a hurry, maybe you should just go buy it. That’s a lot quicker, and will taste a lot better.

It isn’t necessary to get to 18%. A few sequential pitches can do that for you.

I put this up because it seems like that yeast is a good performer and wanted
to know…

Thanks for the good read Sean, I musta missed that somehow…

I read some home distilling forums from time to time, and even home distillers don’t like using the turbo yeast. Harsh flavors, bad character, etc.

In the White and Zainasheff book, they talk about using WLP099 to increase attenuation in high gravity beers, after a traditional lower gravity fermentation.

I was convinced when tubercle chimed in… ;D

[quote]I’m not quite sure how to describe this beer. If a fallen angel had sex with Summer Glau, and their love child was an alcoholic, this is what his urine would taste like. In a good way.

I’ll be honest, sean, I never expected you were actually that clever.

+1

Nice experiment Sean. Someday, I want to try something similiar to this or a DFH 120min. I’ll refer to your notes when I do.

Turbo yeast makes a lot of fusels.

Got it!  Now it is recorded here for the masses!!!

lol, i used to read those too and i know what you mean, with exceptions.

but was checking some LHBS and they still sell this and similar stuff. Why? as far as i can tell its just an overpowering amount of aggressive and highly attenuative yeast with a pile of nutrients, right?

i wonder if you attempted to collect a second generation and simply used a proper amount of slurry on a proper, normal gravity wort what the results would be? im guessing its diastaticus maybe too? maybe its just nottingham?

these instructions are crazy. ive made an all sugar… alcoholic drink of 12% ABV using wine yeast and timed nutrient additions etc. it was NOTHING like vodka or flavour neutral, just odd unpleasant tastes and a disgustingly sweet taste. it was undrinkable.

i cant even imagine something double the strength of that, that would be purely for alcoholics in poverty. i mean wow.

i guess obviously the subtext is that this stuff is to be distilled, but there must be people out there unable or unwilling to distill this alcoholic wash. and even if you did distill it, from what i know, youd still end up with some less than stellar stuff from this.
