I guess it will come down to what other ingredients will make up the recipe and what you want out of the beer. I don’t think you can go wrong with either malt. I love MO but every maltster is different. GP is said to be even richer, maybe sweeter, rounder in flavor if I’m not mistaken. MO is slightly toasty at times and Biscuity is a common term to describe it.
Thanks. I am going with a very simple recipe so the base malt seems pretty important. As you noted, I don’t think I could go wrong with either choice so it will likely just come down to a decision on brew day.
All things equal, I’d use GP for an Irish Red. It has a rich malty flavor without the biscuity/toasty character of MO. I love MO, I just see GP as better suited to the Red.
Ive fallen back in love with my APA now that I’ve switched from GW 2 row to GP and dropped the crystal. Moving my late additions to whirlpool helped too. Love me some Golden Promise.
