base malt for Irish Red - MO vs GP

I have been using German malts almost exclusively for the past year. I am planning an Irish Red at some point and realize it is time to switch it up.

Should I use Marris Otter or Golden Promise? I think I have used MO once ever and have never used GP.

I guess it will come down to what other ingredients will make up the recipe and what you want out of the beer. I don’t think you can go wrong with either malt. I love MO but every maltster is different.  GP is said to be even richer, maybe sweeter, rounder in flavor if I’m not mistaken. MO is slightly toasty at times and Biscuity is a common term to describe it.

Thanks. I am going with a very simple recipe so the base malt seems pretty important. As you noted, I don’t think I could go wrong with either choice so it will likely just come down to a decision on brew day.

Some shops are starting to carry malts from Ireland. You might want to try that if you can find it. I think Morebeer has it.

All things equal, I’d use GP for an Irish Red. It has a rich malty flavor without the biscuity/toasty character of MO. I love MO, I just see GP as better suited to the Red.

+1.

GP it is. Thanks Jon!

I need to try the GP…always used MO in mine.

To me, it has a more rounded, fuller malt note vs the toasty, biscuit Maris Otter.  Both are fantastic though!

There’s no reason not to use MO there if you like the toasty /biscuity character in your red. MO is awesome stuff. I just like GP better in mine.

Ive fallen back in love with my APA now that I’ve switched from GW 2 row to GP and dropped the crystal. Moving my late additions to whirlpool helped too. Love me some Golden Promise.

I’m all for trying something new.just have to find best place to order GP from- nobody carries it locally.

Ken, my LHBS is cheaper than NB, Morebeer, and Midwest :

EDIT - Not sure how price will balance with shipping. I walk in there obviously. Price/lb is 40 cents cheaper than most all others on this grain.

Nice .50 cheaper and same shipping costs.

$1.89/lb in 10lb bags from MoreBeer.

More beer has higher shipping costs so basically the same as great fermentations out the door…either one a better option than NB or MW

Must have missed that - I saw the $2.19/lb.

I always go for the free shipping. Most of the time I can do it without throwing too much fluff into the cart.

Yeah free shipping is the way to go. I just don’t order much online anymore- mostly hops and yeast  I can’t get locally.

Same here. I buy basically everything @ LHBS except hops, which I order from YVH or similar. I don’t like to ship yeast pretty much ever.
