Beer Camp Across America

I just scored a case of Sierra Nevada’s Beer Camp Across America. I’m excited about trying these collaboration beers!

I did the tasting.  Some good beers in there.

My favorite was Chico King.

+1 on Chico King (opinion may be biased).

I got through the 12 pack and attended the Chicago event last weekend. Outstanding. As you work through the beers I recommend following along with the corresponding video/overview/ingredients/tasting notes for each brew. Tap “Open The Pack” from this link:

Spoiler alert: The Wicked Weed/Green Man Scottish Ale brewed with NC sweet potatoes is probably the winner.

It’s been a little hard to find here.  When the stores do have it, they post on twitter or Facebook during the day and by the time I’m out of work, it’s all gone.

The Beer Camp festival for Portland, ME is today.  Wish I was going…Portland is a great beer city!

What a cool idea for all the breweries involved.  I am sure the logistics took a lot of planning.  Either way, good beers in that pack along with a couple winners!

That is why you just shouldn’t go to work, I guess!  8)

The Pils and Alt were great and very good.  If the latter was closer to 40 IBUs it’d likely have been my favorite.  And the former made me once again wish Firestone Walker was distributed here.  ISO Pivo Pils!

still have 5 of 12 to go though…

love the idea but it sounds like there aren’t a great many 12-packs in each market.  Bummer.

I whiffed on a couple opportunities to get it because, well, I have so much beer in my house already and by the time my wife decided she really wanted it the local places were out. Fortunately a local bar is doing a tap takeover with all the beers so we’re going to that next week to try them all out.

I picked up two cases. The Alt and Pils have been my favorite. Agreed that the Scottish ale with sweet potatoes is top notch.

I had the Chico King last night. It was the first I had… Very good. Comes on a little heavy malt on the tongue and finishes amazingly dry. I’m drinking Maillard’s Odyssey Imperial Dark Ale (Bells). This beer is fantastic! Comes on strong caramel and toffee and finished with a mellow roastedness. It’s surprisingly smooth even with an 8.5% ABV. I’ve been trying to think of something to brew for a different winter warmer this year… Something along the lines of this is going to be the ticket.

just had the Oskar Blues beer…dry-hopped bock with wheat and rye sounds like a mess, but it worked for me.

The Scottish Asheville Brewers Alliance beer had that thick viscous pour kinda like a roggenbier; are there any beta-glucans in sweet potatoes?

Cigar City Yonder Bock Tropical Maibock. Not really for me. Fruity nose. The beer fills your mouth, then it’s mysteriously dry. So dry that I keep drinking more… Glass is almost gone now lol

My favorite so far has been the tropical maibock.  I liked the new glarus English ale as well. I was disappointed in both the firestone and the ballast point and also the 3 Floyds.  They were all fine. I think I just expected to be wowed.  Pivo is much better as is Fathom from ballast point.

Both the latte and maillard are excellent.

The rye bock was a little odd.

Haven’t had the rest yet

I also had the alt.  Very good although I think Alaskan’s is better

All were sampled at the Chicago Beer Camp last Sunday. My favorite was the Maillard, and since John Mallett is writing the book on malt I expected something good. All of the beers were drinkable, some I liked more than others.

The fest was fun, I got to talk to many people I know. There were small breweries there that I had never had a beer from, and some I never had heard of. A highlight was the Zwickelbier from Urban Chestnut, I think I had 3 tastes of that one.

March Fourth Marching Band was big fun.

Just scored a 12 pack yesterday…looking forward to trying them out over the next couple weeks.

The best of the bunch is the Double Latte. Pretty pictures here:

the Ballast Point beer is basically a double IPA. (not that that’s a bad thing)
very good beer.

so I guess I still don’t get the point of Imperial Pale Lager if it’s gonna have a bunch of fruity hops.
again, it’s GOOD, but…

Totally agree there!  Good beer, but isn’t still just an IPA?
