Is there anything better than this, for use in a spunding valve?Amazon.com
I see it used in most diy builds but it seems like junk.

I’m not sure, but I got mine (the whole thing) from AIH and it seems to be pretty solid (11 batches now). It doesn’t have any marks on it for pressure, so I just hooked it up to my CO2 and dialed it to the point where the pressure blew off at the right pressure. When I looked at making one, it was going to cost more than just buying it all put together for me.
I have a question for you about that pressure relief valve. In the description is states: “The PSI range on the gauge is 0-15 PSI” but you can clearly see the guage shows 0-60psi. Do it actually ship with a different gauge that only goes from 0-15psi, or is it more that the device can only hold a maximum of 15 psi in it’s closed position?
The gauge on mine goes to 60 and I have it set to 20. I’m not sure where they are getting the description from, but that was a concern for me as well.
What do you find “junk” about it?
The only not functional part is a sticker with the psi scale.
Very good. Thanks for the follow-up… now if AIH would just get them back in stock so I could order a couple
They had one without the gauge as well. I like to have it so I can see that it is still fermenting since the pressure goes up.
I have noticed that it takes a bit before the needle starts to move, maybe a day. I think it is just co2 going into solution and it takes time for the liquid to get really saturated. So, if you get it, don’t be put off if you don’t see pressure building up right off.
I also usually put 3-4psi in from my co2 tank so it has positive pressure and I know it has no leaks. One time the lid didn’t quite stay seated and all the spunding co2 leaked out.
Morebeer has them too, for a bit more money.
I’d like to identify the parts used to make the AIH/Williams spunding valves, but I could use some help identifying parts. I’m sure the overall cost will be about the same as just buying from those stores, but they are both currently out of stock. I’ve taken my best shot at identifying the parts, but any help is appreciated especially for #4 and #5.
edit: thanks nate for help on #4/5
I think 4 is just a mNPT to mNPT nipple and 5 is fNPT to fMFL. But I’m not totally sure
The parts are slightly different, of course, but I’ve used mine about a dozen times so far and been pleased. There is NO correlation between the PRV markings and the actual pressure, but once set it’s reasonably consistent.

Hey, thanks you guys! Nate thanks for the pointers on #4 and #5; your suggestions seem much better than what I had. Also, thanks to you Sean for having already done this - I wish I had seen your post on this earlier.

Bottom of that page as well.
God-damn! Hold on guys, I think I’m really on to something this time…
Yep, the first time I used mine I thought it wasn’t working (or more like I screwed something up, which I usually do). It did just take a day or so to build up enough pressure to register on the gauge itself.
