Brewing Software Options

Good day all, I’m coming back to brewing after an 18 month break and looking to simplify processes where I can. Previously I would create recipes in Brewfather, export to Grainfather app and use that on the brew day. Not sure why but seems a bit of a faff after looking what Grainfather can do on its own. Tilt integration, maybe that’s new. Plus of course it’s free! Only omission seems to be inventory and keeping track of grains, hops etc. if you use the Grainfather app how do you cover this? Ideally looking for a tablet app, and ideally not another subscription. 25 pounds a year now for Brewfather. I see Beersmith 3 mobile app is 5 pounds, maybe that is a good option for inventory but keen to hear what others are doing.

I use the GF app and have found it spot on. I don’t care about inventory tracking. I can just look 8f I want to know.

Thanks Denny, I think I will be doing the same but the inventory management on Brewfather was very useful. Looking for something to fill this gap.

I use BeerSmith for inventory, and it’s quite good. It’s easy to add or edit ingredients, and very handy to just “remove inventory” once I have brewed a recipe. Having good inventory tracking is a real help when I am planning brews – it saves me unnecessary driving to the LHBS or online ordering, and allows me to streamline any purchases.
This is a key feature that keeps me using BeerSmith exclusively (that, and it has a desktop version you can purchase, not just a phone app with eternal software rental).

Thanks Andy, it seems a good idea to do the same for the inventory side. I was looking at the mobile BeerSmith with the one off fee, I think I’ll go with that. I have used the desktop ones previously, mainly the second version before it changed to subscription. At least I think that was how it happened.

Be careful the mobile version of Beersmith may not have inventory tracking. I have the iOS version and don’t see that feature.

It is a feature on BeersmithRecipes.com

Thanks for the info Tommy, that will change my plans if it does not do the one thing I hoped it would. I could fire up v2 on a desktop I suppose but I was trying to avoid a desktop app. That said, I think that is why I went from BeerSmith to Brewfather after it screwed my inventory one too many times. Maybe a spreadsheet is the answer!

I can confirm no inventory on the mobile BeerSmith app, based on a quick check on my installation on my phone. (I have both mobile and desktop)

https://beersmithrecipes.com/ is the online version of BeerSmith. It is very nice on my phone. It has inventory management, recipe design, and I specifically like how it does PH and water treatment better. One thing I don’t like is the recipe timers. The recipe timers don’t work unless you leave the web page open and keep your phone screen on at all times. If you move away from that web page or turn off the screen the alarm will not sound at the next recipe step. The timers on the mobile app work correctly. I use those. I have both.

It has a free 30 day trial and after that you pay for a license based on the number of recipes you store in the cloud. The Gold level (minimum to have the web recipe editor) is $14.95/year.

Note: I don’t use the inventory management. I am like Denny. I just wander down to my brewery and see what I have in stock. I agree the inventory management would be useful, but I’ve always been too lazy to use it.

Edit: clarified recipe timer behavior.

Thanks for all this info. Keeping a simple record seems the way to go and hopefully Grainfather come up with something. Doubt I’m the first person to inquire about it. Considering it’s free it does most of what you want.
