Looking to upgrade my burner for when I want to make 10 gallon batches. I see several options, including Blich Hellfire, Edelmetal Bru Burner (Northern Brewer), Brewbuilt Afterburner(big$$$), Brewer’s Best Element Burner(10psi regulator) and I am sure there are others. What do you all prefer, and why? Have you tried both, or several options. My last brew day with 13.5 gallons of preboil took almost 2 hours to come to a boil ( small bayou classic, not the jet or the banjo). Are there other options you would prefer besides what I have already mentioned?
I can’t answer the question but am looking forward to the opinions.
My burner has seen better days. The kettle supporting frame is starting to be eaten away by the flames. The day is coming that I will have to replace it.

Just now seeing another option in the Anvil Burner, built by Blichman. Only 2/3 the cost of Blichman, no idea on quality.
I have many stoves, but the Afterburner is my fave so far. Brings 13 gal to a boil in under 30 min, is super sturdy, doesn’t give off toxic fumes like black-painted stoves, and is tall enough for gravity-based knockouts into fermonsters. It’s expensive, but I got mine when it was the deal of the day at $290. Still expensive, but I think it was worth it.
Thanx RC, good notes. Not sure I can/want to swing that kind of price, but it’s on the list of potentials
RC are you using it with the standard 0-10 PSI regulator that More Beer says it comes with? And with that, you’re hitting those kinds of boil times?
Frank, I have a hellfire burner sitting unused in the garage. It has the leg extensions already too. Let me know if you’re interested.
Ah…(forehead slap)…you reminded me of something. When the stove arrived, it (inexplicably) didn’t come with a regulator. So I unscrewed the regulator from my Bayou classic and put it on the Afterburner. I have kept it on the Afterburner, even though Morebeer sent me the missing regulator. So my Afterburner has a Bayou classic regulator on it, which is a higher psi regulator (30 psi). I’d guess I have the regulator open about a third of the way with my 18.5 gal kettle. More than that and the flames are halfway up the outside of the kettle.
JT, did you find a better solution, or just don’t like the Hellfire? I am interested, especially with the leg extensions
At 140k btu the Hellfire would be a great option. I’m hooked to NG and use 20 tip jet burners and love them. If my calculations are correct, they produce around 170k btu. I do 12.5 to 22 gallon batches. I can bring my strike to temp in about 20 min. My boil takes about 35 min. IMO I wouldn’t want anything less in btu for doing 10 gallon batches.
Thanx Coolman26
I still use the same Bayou Classic SP10 that I bought 12 years, for all my 5-15 gal batches. Clogged burner maybe?
Could be.
No idea why that typed out like that. That could be Sean, but I’m not using the SP10, I have the classic square bayou classic. Don’t think it’s the same burner or regulator
If memory serves the SP10 and SQ14 are/were the same regulator, just different shapes.
It sure looked like it had a nice clean flame, just not very high. I have had problems with the high flow tripping or whatever. So I know what to look for with that, might need to clean it out though
Have a Blichmann with leg extensions pre hellfire, quality it top notch and is blistering hot. Highly recommended. Anvil looks like same burner with cheaper non SS support structure.
More good info, thanx cmb
I use the Edelmetal burner. The frame is super sturdy and keeps the kettle from slipping. In other words, the frame keeps the kettle centered above the 72,000 BTU propane burner. Important point to mention: I use my burner indoors, in my basement. I have a carbon dioxide detector within a few feet of my boil station and an inexpensive vent above my kettle. So, I have never experienced any issues. When adjusted properly, the flame is as clean as a burner on your natural gas stove. Plus, I can bring 11 gallons from about 120-130 degrees to a rolling boil in about 20-25 minutes.
When I bought mine it was about $150. I can see now it’s up to about $165. Still a good deal. The only drawback I found is that it cannot be converted to Natural Gas.
I used to use (and still have) the ‘Blingman’ Top Tier. It is a very nice burner but I moved to Induction inside (which I cannot recommend more).
