Buying crushed grain on line

As much as I would like to buy a mill I have to watch my dollars.  Is the amount of time crushed grain would spend in shipping going to have an adverse affect on quality?  How long before Oxidation becomes an issue with the grain?  Are you happy buying grain on line?  Thanks for all the information out there.

There is nothing wrong with buying crushed grain online. I used to do so before buying a mill. The quality is fine. If you keep it in the fridge it will last a month or two with out any problems.

The issue is the crush is usually not very fine and therefore your efficiency may suffer.

You can ask most places for a double crush to improve efficiency.

Yeah the crushed grains will be fine for awhile as long as you have them sealed… I would not store them in the fridge however.

why not?

The cool temp could cause the grain to lose moisture which will then condense on the bag it’s stored in.  Basically the same reasons you don’t store bread or coffee in the refrigerator.

Yeah, you want a cool, dry place. And dry is more important than cool.

Thanks.

Thanks for the response, I will get a mill just not sure how soon or which one.  Meanwhile I’ll see if on line is cheaper than the local shop and I’ll have the local shop run it through the mill twice, good idea.  Thanks again

Supporting a local business is always more appreciated then supporting on line business.

I was buying crushed grain from Midwest or Northern brewer for years until a local homebrew shop opened up.
Never had any quality issues, I kept it stored in a tightly sealed storage container in my basement until ready.

Online companies are coming up with better ways to seal up crushed grains. I’m finding the quality has really improved over the last year. Sometimes they’re sealed so well with bags inside bags that they can be a pain to open. I have waited 9 months to use crushed grain without a problem, though I have noticed issues if I open and reseal grain when buying crushed in bulk.
