I ordered these 10 lb bags of C40 and C60 with my last big grain purchase. I think that it’s safe to say that you can’t trust the labels on your grains. Seems to me that they’re a little backwards in this case. I’m glad I pulled them both out of the storage bin before I weighed my grains out this morning.
Crush a bit and do a mini steep to see what happens.
I agree witt Steve. The C60 always looked lighter to me. But you are more concerned with the sugars inside. Crack some and see. Do the mini mash.
I have two pound packages of C40 that I bought from the same place that are the exact same color of what is labeled as C60 in this picture.
Then you may have a problem. Do a test and see which you should use in what application. Maybe I have. Gotten some mislabeled in the past.
I’d be curious to see what you notice in the steep test. Weigh out equal grain, equal water, etc. Like Jeff says, it’s the color of the sugar crystal inside that counts.
I’d be interested in knowing your finding if you did a steep test. I find C60 to create a much sweeter beer than C40 in the few batches I’ve used quantity with it; however, the color was definitely towards the darker spectrum with C60.
