I do that for almost all of my starters and it works just fine. I only boil starters if I have an old yeast pack or waking up bottle dregs - cases where I’m starting with a low cell count that can’t compete as well with potential contaminants.
I like the idea behind this product, but don’t see the benefit if it needs dilution.
I’ve also heard that Malta Goya works in a pinch. That’s probably a lot more cost effective.
It’s too early to do the math, but I’m pretty sure you could buy a pressure canner and make your own for cheaper. At least that’s what we’ve been doing - I’m much too lazy to boil a starter but I can surely can starter wort!
I think this will sell. It’s $10 for 4 cans. That’s $2.50 for a 2L starter. If you use 8oz of DME in a 2L starter your cost is close to $2 and you have the hassle of boiling it (if you boil it) and cleaning up.
In their Q/A they claim you should dilute with tap water. The SG before dilution is 1080.
Yeah, canning would be sterilizing and you can store at room temp, but I would think that one could boil up a large batch of starter wort and freeze in sanitized quart food containers. Pull one or two out of the freezer when needed and thaw out in the microwave.
