Cranberries in American Brown Porter

I got about 2 lbs of cranberries leftover from Thanskgiving sitting in the freezer.  I was thinking of adding them to 5 gallons of American Brown Porter (American here means more alcoholic and Cascade flavor hops, clone of Flossmoor Station’s Pullman Brown).  I’m planning to add a 1 lb to the secondary, tasting it after a couple of days, and possibly adding more cranberries depending on the taste.

Questions:  Is it possible that 1 lb of cranberries would be too much as an initial addition?  Should I run the cranberries through a blender in addition to the freezing?

Thanks

that sounds awesome.  doubt too much. typically 1 pound per gallon of fruit.  i would blend them or mash them up. may want to think about boiling them as well prior to addition

If you boil them you could set the pectin and end up with porter jello!

I think boiling them would be a bad idea because of the haze formed from pectin, but then again it’s a pretty dark beer anyway.  Mashing or blending the berries should accelerate the flavor extraction.  One pound is very little in 5 gallons.

…and that’s a bad thing - why?
